Pair of shockers. BC manhandled the Raiders and BCAS over Reese...WOW!
I watched the Bearcats take apart Deckerville...40-zip.
Ubly is the best team in the Thumb. Millington, Cros-Lex, Almont, Birch Run...playing for Number 2.
Almont 42-0
Almont has really impressed me! They really threw a wrench in the works by beating CL. That was the best game I have ever seen. I wasn't surprised to see Armada miss the playoffs - even after a 4-0 start. They just didn't look to be able to hold up to the rigors of the BWAC after that game with Yale.
Chuik - I would put the Bearcats at #3. An undefeated record is great, but when your non-conference schedule has a combined record of 8-16, they are in for an awakening come playoff time. Deckerville showed last week that they would be a sub .500 team if they were in the GTC, and they reinforced that tonight. The BWAC plays at such a high level that the best of the GTC would have a tough time with the mid level teams from the BWAC.
Millington is a powerhouse program that plays in a tough league.
You just can't put everything into the record at this point. You have to look at the body of work as a whole!
That being said, I think that Ubly is still one of the best overall programs in the area. They have shown dominance at times that makes you believe that anything is possible for this team.
Adam, you make good points, however, this Bearcat team hasn't been challenged yet.
Almont, Cros-Lex or Millington would give them that. But, IMHO, the Bearcats really are something special again this year and would put the L on the best of the BWAC/TVE.
Ubly has the size, talent and coaching that places them a step above even the bigger B schools in the area.
To bad we will never know for sure.
By the way last years semifinal opponent Hudson is 8-0 through Week 8 in the Lenawee County Athletic Association. That is a Class C size school with a 307 student body that defeated Class B(577 students) Onsted who is at 7-1 in that same league. Does make you wonder if Ubly could pull off a good win over a BWAC or Tri-Valley team. Ubly did whoop on Vassar last year who were Class B but now are Class C. I think it would be a good move for Ubly to schedule at least one Class B size school. But will it ever happen?
Chuik - the fact that Ubly hasn't been challenged is my whole point. The BWAC and TVE schools are challenged each and every week - even by the weaker teams on their schedule.
Ubly has scheduled a soft non-conf schedule, and only has one playoff team that they have a VERY close win over in Sandusky. I'm not saying they are not a good team (8-0 isn't easy in any league), I just don't think they could hang with an Almont, Cros-Lex or Millington.
A game like that on their schedule would add a lot of credibility in my book.
Adam, The Sandusky game was ages ago, this is a completely different team now. You may remember, Ubly spotted Sandusky a 21-0, but was able to come back. There's not too many teams that can bounce back from a deficit like that.
In many ways, the game against Sandusky instilled the confidence the players have now. I think if they would have rolled in that game, they wouldn't be having the season they're having now.
The way Ubly is playing right now, I would at least give them a chance against those bigger schools.
There's nothing to gain for the likes of Almont, Cros-Lex, Millington or any other big school to play Ubly. The way the playoffs are setup, it benefits the small school and penalizes the bigger school. There's no way those bigger schools want to risk losing to Ubly and dropping a lot of playoff points.
Everyone talking about the schedule, but there aren't many teams lining up to play Ubly.
You say Ubly has scheduled a soft non-conference schedule. Ubly always opens with USA, Bad Axe was the crossover, they played Deckerville (for what is probably the last time, but it's still a rivalry game) and North Huron came to Ubly when Ubly could not find a ninth game. As I said before, it's easier said than done finding opponents that want to play you when you're good.
For the past two seasons, we've heard the same thing about Ubly. "They haven't been challenged. Who have they played?"
In those seasons, they were a state runner-up and made it to a semifinal. Time will tell this year, but history is on Ubly's side.
Paul P.
Try this for a body of work and stats to confirm credibility. As of this morning 89 W's 25 L's over the last 10 years. Three regionals, 1 semi final, 3 league championships, 10 years in a row in the playoffs and 31 regular season wins in a row. Someone tell me what Ubly has to do to make a statement. Ubly has a great coaching staff and the kids play hard every night they go out and Bearcat fans are some of the best around. Ubly has represented the GTC (one of the best class c football conferences in the state) very well and they should be proud.
Thank you Paul! You summed up to a T what the situation is REALLY like.
I had a rather candid conversation with a GTC AD this week and we talked at length about scheduleing and the logistics behind it now that Deckerville left a hole in schedules of all the GTC teams.
We also talked about scheduling "bigger" schools to bolster playoff points and home field. In a lot of the cases it simply doesn't work out. When Ubly has an opening in week 9, Millington might have an opening in week 6 Almont in week 2 or Cros-Lex in week 5. Ubly held out as long as possible to fill the hole in week 9 and it was North Huron that came calling as they were in the same boat as Paul stated above.
And if many of you would think about it....it's not Ubly's fault that Bad Axe is the cross over game and winless this year. It's not Ubly's fault that Mayville is as bad as they are. It's not Ubly's fault that Deckerville left the GTE and created a scheduleing nightmare (not only for them but the rest of te GTC).
Ubly just can't run out and act like an independent (see Nouvel or TCSF) and load up the schedule with class A & B schools because they think they might be good in a particular year.
They can't just run out and grab Millington and Vassar and Cros-Lex year in and year out because it just won't work out with all parties involved. Many schedules are locked sometimes a few years in advance.
When Adam writes stuff like
"Ubly has scheduled a soft non-conf schedule, and only has one playoff team that they have a VERY close win over in Sandusky. I'm not saying they are not a good team (8-0 isn't easy in any league), I just don't think they could hang with an Almont, Cros-Lex or Millington.
A game like that on their schedule would add a lot of credibility in my book".
Really Adam?? Ubly isn't an independent and I don't see any of these schools knocking on Ubly's door to schedule them.....it is a two way street. And it's not Ubly's fault that no one other Sandusky is in the playoffs from the GTE.
Sometimes a B school doesn't want to play a C school for fear of losing playoff points (again echoing Paul above). Let's say Ubly gets Millington or Almont on the schedule for 2012 and are 2-5 heading into that game.....guarenteed the people at Millington/Almont will be bitching and complaining much like fans are complaining about the Ubly/NH game.
Sit down a few AD's from the GTC and actually listen to them and you will see why this doesn't always work out the way the fans would like.
All Saints only has 2 losses at the start of the year with two linebackers who are also running backs injured, for a small team, that's a big piece missing, now 100% with a 6 game win streak rolling
Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard Fighting Irish
Dearborn Divine Child Falcons
Redford Union Panthers
Here are three teams that Ubly could have played in Week 9, Rick. All bigger schools than Kinde-North Huron and 2 of the 3 with better records. Quit being such a Ubly homer and why don't you and Paul try being objective for once. You might have some credibility.
Anonymous, I was completely being objective. Everything I stated was fact.
You tell me one thing in my post that was a "homer" statement.
Paul P.
Paul - you bring up some great points - and definitely didn't make any "homer" statements.
I am not trying to take away anything that Coach Sweeney and his team have done this year - or any other year. They have what is hands down the most dominant program in the area over the past 10 years - and have been able to keep their standard of play VERY high. I hope that we get the chance to cover them a long way into the playoffs again this year.
The point that I am trying to make is this: If Ubly was playing in the BWAC or TVE - they would not be running over their opponents each game - and would not be holding 31 regular season wins. There is a good chance if they played in either of these leagues that they would not have 10 straight years in the playoffs.
With that being said, when you rank teams - the best should be at the top. You are right when you say that Millington or Almont will not have Ubly on their schedule. There is no advantage to that game for them. But you can't say that makes Ubly better than either team.
Food for thought - let's just be happy we have so much great football in the thumb!
Anon, I'm only defending a program and school that has been getting bagged on at every turn for the sucess they have......just like I've done for EVERY other school that has been in the same situation. See USA and Harbor Beach of years past. I've done the same there too.
Homer? I don't think so....but if you do, then so be it.
Creditablilty? At least I put my name on a post. You can't say the same.
As for those schools you listed that Ubly could have played.....were they willing to travel or were they seeking home games?
Ubly got snake bitten by Mt. Caramel a fews years ago when they agreed to a home and home and later backed out AFTER Ubly made the trip down there the year before.
Why would anyone think Ubly 263(enrollment) should play Millington 546,Almont 607 or CrosLex 735? Should they play Rockford 2599 or Detroit Catholic Central 2120 also? A little common sense goes a long way.
I honestly don't think that anyone wants to go see them get spanked - but then why the argument that they should be ranked above those teams? And if everyone feels that they could handle one of those teams - then why wouldn't you want to see that game played???
Maybe there should be two- division ranking: Over 450 Enrollment and Under 450 enrollment. That would sure take the fun out of these discussions though!
From Rick Glaza:
"...it's not Ubly's fault that Bad Axe is the cross over game and winless this year."
I agree, but then again, Bad Axe has been on the schedule for the 12th straight year. When does it no longer become "the cross over game?" Usually that is on a rotation bases. 12 straight years?
At some point, that has to be on Ubly to change it up.
Ubly played Almont in 1998 and 1997 and lost both meetings... Ubly also played Cros-Lex in 96-01 and posted a 2-4 record against the pioneers. Deckerville who has a similar enrollment to Ubly played the pioneers from 91-01 and posted a 8-2 record against Cros-Lex. Common sense says that the better team will win regardless of size. Ubly this year could not compete with either Almont, Cros-Lex, or Millinton. Not based on enrollment but rather on talent. I think everyone can agree each year after the 2008 Ubly team the Bearcats have declined. I'm not so sure that this years Cats would have placed in the top half of the 2008 GTCE. The train is coming to a stop soon in Ubly. Just like it did for the late 80's early 90's Brown City Green Devils, the late 90's early 00's USA Patroits and the the Big Thumb/ GTCE Deckerville Eagle teams.
The train is coming to a stop soon? Wouldn't a team have to loose a game before someone can declare that? You must have some crystal ball.
Annon2 - I agree. Don't send Ubly to the locker room just yet. The only thing that might get in the way of their dominance in the next 2-3 years will be Harbor Beach. I predict they will be back with a vengeance.
(If that comes to fruition - I don't want any accolades for it. I just want Eddie to stop talking about the upset he predicted sometime in the last decade... :D)
