Game Of The Night - 1st Round

Thumb Tailgater Sports will be covering the Millington vs Carrollton high school football playoff game. This is an exciting game for us to cover as we wanted to try to get in a Tri-Valley area team. Here we get two! The teams are in the Division 5, Region 2, District 2 bracket, and will take on the winner of the Vassar @ Fint Beecher game.
Carrollton ended up sharing the Tri-Valley West title with Saint Charles & Ithaca who are both in the playoffs. Carrollton finished the season at 8-1 and their only loss was to Ithaca 48-27. The Cavaliers are coming off back to back winning seasons, led by Head Coach Greg Wasmer. Carrollton had losing seasons from 1993 to 2007, so it has been a great turn around since Coach Wasmer came in to Carrollton. They lost in the second round of the playoffs in 2008, falling to Saginaw Nouvel 35-3. Nouvel finished at 4-5 this year and are not even a factor in the playoffs this year. Getting a taste of that playoff experience should give Carrollton a boost, but in the first round they contend against a team that has been in the thick of the playoffs for many years.....

Millington finished the season at 8-1, and their only loss was to league rival and the Tri-Valley East champions Essexville-Garber 14-7. Another added note is the Millington Head Coach Tim Furno had annonced that he would be retiring at the end of this football season; I'm sure the Cardinal team would like to extend that season for Coach Furno to stick around a little bit longer. Millington has not had a losing season since 1988!! Last year the Cardinals lost to their league rival Essexville-Garber in the first round 33-20. Millington made it to the fourth round in 1999 where they lost to Birmingham Detroit Country Day Yellowjackets 10-7, who went on to win the state title that year. Another interesting note is that Millington wants to join the Greater Thumb Conference.

Thumb Tailgater Sports live internet audio cast starts at 5:50pm for the pre-game show and game time is set for 7pm. Log on and tune in!

We also welcome an addition to our Thumb Tailgater Sports announcing team - Mark "Mad Dog" Dimon will be joining us as our official stats man, and as our extra set of eyes on the field. You will hear him chime from time to time with his analysis of the game.

Coverage Change Of Plans...

Thumb Tailgater Sports will now be doing the Sandusky @ Bay City All Saints game; the Redskins need a win to secure a playoff spot, while the Cougars would love to play spoiler! We were ready to do the Cros-Lex @ Yale game, but the Sandusky radio station has decided to do that one.
Thumb Tailgater then hope to get the Brown City vs Memphis contest in Week 9 to wrap up our regular season. We think this will work positively for us, and have yet covered a Sandusky, Memphis or Brown City game; all teams have the strong possibility to enter the post season.
Our friends at WLEW Radio, Cruise 102.1fm will be broadcasting the Ubly @ Deckerville game.
92.1 FM WIDL is covering the "Sugar Bowl", Reese vs Unionville-Sebewaing game.

Deckerville Eagles - NCTL Bound!

Deckerville was voted into the North Central Thumb League by a 9-0 vote, and was officially announced at the Greater Thumb Conference Monthly Athletic Director meeting on October 7, 2009. Deckerville will play in the NCTL starting with the 2010 - 2011 school year. The Greater Thumb Conference also recieved an application from Memphis High School to join the GTC.
No vote was taken on another school joining the GTC league, and the issue was tabled until next month's meeting. Most likely, a committee will be formed to search for another school to fill Deckerville's spot in the league. More information will follow as it unfolds.

Thumb Tailgater Sports Week 7 & 8 Notes

Can you believe that we are only three weeks away from the playoffs?!? Wow, this season has went by, but it is far from over for some Thumb Area teams.

In the Greater Thumb East, Brown City, Deckerville, Sandusky & Marlette are all fighting for playoff survival!
With the Greater Thumb West, the road has gotten a little bumpy for the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers to get to the postseason. Lakers need just one more win to get in the playoffs. Vassar is also battling to bust their way into the playoffs. Reese got in by beating Lakers in Week 7, and causing a current three way for the GTW Title!

The North Central Thumb League the on the line for the Memphis Yellowjackets. They will take on the feisty Peck Pirates; both teams are 4-3 overall, so this is an important game for the schools to try to win out and make it in to the playoffs. Peck would also like a share of the NCTL Title as Memphis could leave with the outright championship and the league after this year. Dryden needs just one win as their record is at 5-2 and the North Huron Warriors are clinging to post season hopes also with their record at 4-3.

In the Blue Water Area Conference, four teams have the major case to make it to the playoffs! That's how competitive it is in that Class B league. Richmond, Capac, Yale, and Almont will battling it out this week in their league games with each other. Croswell-Lexington is at Yale this week; this game has lost a little luster as it could have been for the outright title for the Pioneers. But thanks to the Capac Chiefs victory who edged the Yale Bulldogs in Week 7- 14-13, the Pioneers can now breathe a little easier as they clinch a playoff spot and the BWAC Title. However Cros-Lex can't take it easy with Yale who will be coming into this game and take another bite towards the postseason! Croswell-Lexington by the way, is ranked #2 this week in the Tuscola County Sports Blog, Thumb Power Poll.

The Tri-Valley East League has a couple "slobber knockers", as Essexville-Garber & Millington have clinched their playoff spots. North Branch is on the cusp, needing one more win - but it is against 2nd place Millington Cardinals! And if the 3rd place North Branch Broncos don't get that win over Millington, they will have to contend with BWAC league opponent Yale Bulldogs in Week 9! Garber could win the outright Tri-Valley East title with a victory over Bridgeport this Friday night.

Huron Daily Tribune Sports Writer Paul Adams & Huron County Press Editor Chris Ogryski will be back for the Week 8 Edition of the Thumb Tailgater Sports Show. Our schedules were overloaded in Week 7 so that is why they were absent from this past week. That show will be ready to be posted very late Wednesday or the early hours of Thursday. Portions of the show will make it on our Live Stream Audio Cast on Friday night.
WLEW Sports Guy - Rick Glaza will also be my special guest once again this week also and that show will be ready also by Thursday, either on this blog or at our website - www.thumbtailgater.com

Clash Of The Champions : Week 7

I have coined Week 7 as Championship Week....why? Because both the Greater Thumb West & East Titles are up for grabs!
The Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers and the Reese Rockets will battle on the gridiron in Championship Week 7. That will also be the Game Of The Week on Thumb Tailgater Sports! Coverage starts at 6pm live on streaming internet audio. We hope to have some head coach interviews with our usual pre-game show. The Rockets are fighting for a share of the Greater Thumb "Wild" West Title. Lakers want it outright as they continue to flood the west by beating the BCAS Cougars and hope to douse the flames of the refueled Reese Rockets who got back into orbit by ripping Cass City in Week 6. Tune in on Friday night on Thumb Tailgater Sports for this titanic showdown!
Brown City's shocking loss to Sandusky sets them up to control their own destiny for the Greater Thumb East Title. The Greendevils will try to do what many in the Thumb area think cannot be done...beat Ubly. If Brown City does that they can get a share of the GTE title.
Ubly has already accomplished one goal; secure a playoff berth; Goal 2 - take each game one at a time and the rest of the goals fall into place; Goal 3 - GTE Title; Goal 4 - secure home field advantage during majority of playoffs; Goal 5 - Win State Title.
Talking to Ubly Head Coach Bill Sweeney a few times already he takes each game one game at a time and every mistake that a player commits, he makes sure that situation is taken care of. I ran into a Ubly player who got called for a penalty and got really hot headed about it. The player said if it wasn't for Coach Sweeney's calm but commanding deameanor, the situation could have escalated. The Bearcat player told me that help get his head back into the game and ensued the thrashing of the Vassar football team on Friday night. This team still believes in this system and has all the tools to go to Ford Field again. Will they have a rematch with Travis City Saint Francis? Like Coach Sweeney says...one game at a time.
