Warriors Make Statement Upsets Ubly

Thumb Tailgater Sports had quite a game on Wednesday night as we closed out the 2009 year with a bang! The North Huron Warriors pulled off an upset over the Ubly Bearcats in high school boys basketball action. Warriors hung in for the thrilling furious closing seconds securing a rebound to seal the win 49-47.
Some unofficial stats:
Sean Clancy made 21 points, along with 7 rebounds, where 3 of those shots were three pointers, and also had a exclamation slam dunk on the night for North Huron. However that celebratory dunk gave the Ubly Bearcats a nice wide open three pointer by Justin Cleary who closed the gap on North Huron in the closing seconds of the game. Sean Clacy did answer back by making two key free throws for North Huron to hold the lead. But Ubly's Adam Glaza tied the game at 47-47, after swooshing a three pointer with about :14 seconds left.
Then quickly Erik Dhyse got the inbounds play and zipped the ball to an open Kevin Rice for the layup and the 49-47 lead and game winner.
The Bearcats leading scorers were Justin Cleary who had 9 points which were all three pointers. Tyler Kubacki had 12 points & 9 rebounds for Ubly. Steven Weber was an important part of the Ubly comeback in the 4th quarter with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Adam Glaza dropped in 11 points which three were from 3 point range for the Bearcats.
But North Huron had shooting threats from junior Erik Dhyse who threw in 16 points and came down with six rebounds. Cory Babiszewski also contributed with 10 points where at least two of those shots were key in holding the lead late in the 4th, for the Warriors.
The game ended where Ubly had a chance to tie it up but after two to three straight shot attempts in front of the net, the ball just would not fall into the hoop, and the Warriors came down with the rebound and held onto as time ran out. North Huron remains undefeated at 4-0, while Ubly got their first loss and fall to 3-1 overall in this early basketball season.

Also a very special thank you to the Original Thumb Tailgaters themselves - Paul Adams     - Huron Daily Tribune & Chris Ogryski     - Huron County Press. They came on for the halftime show.

In another game that may have started the rebirth of a rivalry in the NCTL next season, was the comeback victory for the Deckerville Eagles over the Carsonville-Pt Sanilac Tigers 53 - 50, earlier on Wednesday afternoon at CPS High School.
Deckerville was down by 11 points heading into the 4th quarter. Top scorers for the Eagles were Scott Gobie with 19 points; John Decker 14, & Kyle Rich had 7.
For the Tigers, leading scorers were Hayden Adams with 12 points, Steve Koehler 11, and Ryan Davis with 9 points. Deckerville with the victory gained their first win of the season.
Special thanks to Tyler Gifford for the Deckerville @ CPS update. Tyler will be reporting updates of  Deckerville boys & girls basketball games.

I give credit to both teams. But North Huron played hard and tough against this good Ubly team, who may still be trying to get into bball game shape. And Ubly had a tough stretch of high caliber games to start this basketball season against Reese, Lakers & USA and still came out so far in pretty good shape at 3-1. But coming up next for the Bearcats is Cass City & then league play that starts with a pretty good Sandusky team! Followed by Mayville, Bay City All Saints, Bad Axe & Brown City. Quite a task there.
For North Huron up next is Owen-Gage, Peck, Caseville, CPS,Deckerville and Dryden. Tonight was a great win for the Warriors, but talking to Coach Empkie, he wants to team to enjoy this victory but shake the off euphoria of the win after the New Year and get their heads back into those games where they cannot go in playing soft. Which I am sure he will not let that happen. Good luck to both teams. The Thumb area is real spoiled to have such competitive teams in all leagues.

Like your play by play skills, your writing skills need a severe overhaul.
