Brown City Sweeps To Grab Share Of GTE Title

The Brown City Lady Greendevils faced some insurmountable odds in facing off against a very tough Mayville softball team. They had to win both games of the doubleheader in order to take a share of the Greater Thumb East Title. All the Lady Wildcats had to do was just win one game and walk away with the title outright.
Brown City did just that - they went against the odds and swept Mayville 4-0 & 10-0, to take a share of the GTE league title, and is now poised to take it outright if Mayville cannot defeat Marlette in a completion of an earlier tied game that was 2-2 in the 7th inning. Mayville have destiny in their "gloves" yet again as the finish of that game will see if Mayville & Brown City will end up being co-champions. That game completion may not be able to be played on a date until after the districts start!
In Game 1, it was scoreless through 7 inning; and due to the international extra innings rule, Brown City had a runner (Kristen Greene) on 2nd base to start the top of the 8th inning. The bats started to light up with the first batter, Asleigh Blovsky getting a bunt single that got Greene over to 3rd base and in the ensuing play Blovsky got to 2nd.
Brown City was now in scoring positon for the first time in the whole game. Sarah Murray was up next with a nice grounder RBI single into the left field to get Greene in for the first run. Runners then were able to be positioned at 2nd & 3rd. Vikki Vanhorn then hit a RBI double into left field also to bring in Blovsky for the score making it 2-0. Still with runners on 2nd & 3rd, Kari Burton made it first base due to a bobbled error at short stop that allowed two more runs to be scored for Brown City making it 4-0. Mayville was finally able to stop the onslaught to prevent another couple of potential runs.
However the Lady Wildcats was not able to answer back in the bottom of the 8th inning as the defense of Brown City got the 1,2,3 straight outs to take Game 1, and survive in the hunt for the league title.
Kristen Greene was the winning pitcher for the Lady Greendevils with 9 K's & 2 walks, that included three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the 7th inning, and stayed just under 90 pitches thrown for the game.
Amy Elenbaum had 5 K's for Mayville, along with her team mates who played great defense only allowing base runners in the 2nd & 3rd innings who were not real threats for scoring. Elenbaum had also threw about at total of 95 pitches.
Mayville also did have their scoring chances early on. In the bottom of the 2nd inning with two outs, but with runners on the corners, Jamie Martell was on third but got thrown out at home plate after an attempted steal to try to score. Another big opportunity was in the 4th inning where Mayville had base hit singles from Chelsea Roehl & Amy Elenbaum to reach 1st & 2nd base with no outs. Brown City was able to get out of that jam, thanks to their infield defense with a ground out and then a big fly out catch that enabled a double play out. In the 6th inning Shelby Powell & Chelsea Roehl had base hit singles but Mayville was not able to capitalize due to the tough pitching and fielding defense of Brown City.
Game 2 saw both Kristen Greene & Amy Elenbaum as once again starting pitchers for their respected teams. Mayville had their last huge moment to take a lead and score the first runs in Game 2 early in the 2nd inning with the bases loaded and with no outs. But the Brown City infield defense with two fly outs and then a strikeout by Greene took the air out of the Lady Wildcats last prime opportunity to score any runs for the rest of the game.
Brown City carried their base hitting momentum into the second game in a huge way by scoring 2 runs each in the 2nd, 3rd, & 5th innings.
And then wrapping up their sweep of the double header in the 6th inning by getting four runs scored and activating the 10-0 mercy rule. Thus ending the game officially at 11-0, as two runs scored due to a Kristen Greene two RBI single game ender.
For Brown City - Samantha Gierman was one of the top players with 3 singles, 3 RBI's, and scoring 3 runs herself. Sarah Murray also continued her power with two singles, a triple, RBI, and scored a run. Jennifer McClelland also had two singles, and scored a run. Ashleigh Blovsky hit a single and a double and scoring two runs. Alena Sanson batted a single and scored two runs. Kayla Muxlow had a single & scored a run in the 6th inning to help take Game 2, as did Kari Burton who scored in the 6th and drew two walks. Vikki Vanhorn also contributed with a RBI double in the 2nd inning.
Kristen Greene came away as the the winning pitcher for Brown City with 6 K's, one walk, four singles, and throwing a total of about 78 pitches.
For Mayville - Amy Elenbaum had two singles in the 1st & 6th inning; Annie Richardson & Jamie Martell each had a single themselves in the 2nd.
Amy Elenbaum was the losing pitcher throwing about 80 pitches, with no strikeouts and allowing two walks.
