Last night on Thursday was the end of the regular season for thumb area girls basketball in the NCTL & GTC.
The Reese Lady Rockets blasted their way on as the lone holders and became the Queens of the west as the became the Greater Thumb West Champions with a victory over the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers, 61- 41. The Lady Rockets finished the season at 18-2 overall, 9-1 in the GTW. This was also their second straight Greater Thumb West Title.
Sandusky Lady Redskins had to fight hard to grab their share of the Greater Thumb East Title, with a comeback victory over the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates, 46 - 40. Sandusky are Co-Champions with the Brown City Lady Greendevils. The Co-Champs could possibly meet again in the District final at Brown City High School.
Thumb Tailgater Sports will covering all the games in that No.81 District.
The Port Hope Lady Bluestars had claimed the NCTL North Title over a week ago as well as the Memphis Lady Yellowjackets who took the NCTL South Championship.

Which now brings the last Friday night game for most of the high school boys basketball teams in the Thumb area of the NCTL & GTC. Some major implications on tap for tonight in the GTC.
First, in the Thumb Tailgater Sports Webcast game of the night that pits the Vassar Vulcans at the Bay City All Saint Cougars. This game tonight will still not decide who the front runner will be as the kings of west. Even if the Cougars win they still have games with Reese & Bad Axe. Both of those latter teams have to potential to play major spoiler for the All Saints at the end of the season next week.
If Vassar wins they can also hope to win outright or at least a share of the GTW title. Even the Lakers have an outside shot of winning a share of the title, even after three straight league losses! Now this is the "Wild West" I always been spewing about, and it is a delightful mess if it comes down to that! Tonight though could be the end of the road for the Lakers if they have a fourth straight loss to the Reese Rockets! That game will be broadcast on WIDL 92.1 FM.
The Greater Thumb East Title could be claimed by the Harbor Beach Pirates with a victory over the Sandusky Redskins and a Deckerville upset over the Ubly Bearcats. Does that scenario seem likely? We have seen some strange endings in the Thumb area high school sports during the basketball season! Ubly just has to take care of business and I am sure they have been wishing upon the stars and saying their prayers for a Sandusky win.
North Huron has already taken the NCTL North Title a couple of weeks ago, but the NCTL South championship has yet to be fully decided. Carsonville-Port Sanilac currently have a strong hold of the South, but must win out through the end of the season to claim the title. Peck also needs to win out and hope for a Carsonville loss in order to get a share of the title. It won't be easy for Peck as they have games against Akron-Fairgrove, North Huron & Kingston!
On a side note Ubly High School will have an Alumni Basketball Game, that is in turn a fundraiser this Saturday night. Check the right column of this blog for more info.
**Now then again there could very well be some cancellations due to the cold, cold blowing wind freeze that the Thumb has been slammed with! So if you know that a game will be postponed post it in our blogger comments section, or email.

Championship Thursday Night

Thursday Basketball Games:
GIRLS

Reese 61, Lakers 41 - T.T.S. Webcast, Rockets GTW Champs
Sandusky 46, Harbor Beach 40 - Redskins Co-Champs GTE w/ Brown City
Vassar 45, @ Bay City All Saints 40
Marlette 56, @ Mayville 45
Deckerville 57, @ Ubly 40
Essexville-Garber 69, @ USA 67 - O.T.
Cass City 49, vs Bad Axe 33
CPS 47, vs Akron-Fairgrove 35
Caseville 31, vs Dryden 29
North Huron 29, vs Kingston 27
Memphis 58, @ Owen-Gage 28 - Memphis NCTL South Champs
Port Hope 63, vs Peck 30 -  Port Hope NCTL North Champs

Tonight marks the end of the season for the NCTL & GTC girls basketball teams. It also features two title championship games on the line!
Thumb Tailgater Sports features one of those games live on the internet! In the Greater Thumb West. It's the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers hosting the Lady Rockets. The Lady Lakers must defeat the Reese Lady Rockets for at least a share of the GTW Title. If they do not - Reese will be the undisputed Greater Thumb West champions. Vassar Lady Vulcans will be pulling for the Lakers to beat Reese to create a three way tie for the GTW title, but Vassar also has to beat Bay City All Saint Lady Cougars. What "Wild West" end of the season.

It's not over there! Harbor Beach Lady Pirates may have some fans from Brown City in the stands at the Thumb Dome tonight! Sandusky Lady Redskins hosts Harbor Beach in both teams season ending game, where if Sandusky wins they will share the Greater Thumb East Title with the Brown City Lady Greendevils. If Harbor Beach wins, the GTE title will be in "soul" possession of the Lady Greendevils.
Last year was a crazy end of the season in the East where Brown City took the title due to some minor upsets. Let me rehash your memory again, back in the year 2009....
On Tuesday, February 22nd, 2009: It looked like the Ubly Lady Bearcats would have at least a share of the title by beating Brown City 51-47. That created a three way tie for the title with Sandusky & Brown City. Sandusky had won that night over Deckerville to keep it's share.
But then later that week on Thursday the final night of the regular season of the GTC - Deckerville Lady Eagles and Harbor Beach Lady Pirates pulled off huge upset wins. Deckerville beat Ubly in the final minutes with a big comeback win 47-40. Harbor Beach shellacked the Sandusky Lady Redskins 43-35. Those upset wins enabled the Brown City to claim the GTE Title.

Log on tonight with Thumb Tailgater Sports with updates on the Harbor Beach @ Sandusky game and of course on the internet for the live audio webcast of the Lady Lakers versus the Reese Lady Rockets!

*Congratulations does need to go out again to the Port Hope on winning the NCTL North Championship, and also to Memphis Lady Yellowjackets on claiming the NCTL South Title.

Wednesday Whiplash!

Thumb Tailgater Sports was out Wednesday night making some stops in Huron County at some Greater Thumb West boys basketball games with implications. No webcasts though - just catching up on some teams and coaches as we get closer to the end of season.
Some big clashes were on tonight. In particular was the Vassar @ Lakers game. The Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers are still stinging from their two defeats last week against the Bay City All Saints. They have to forget about that and shake it off and get back into their hopes of a share of the GTW. It will be tough against the Vulcans as they have reloaded with the return of some players who were on a long suspension from basketball play. Vassar just needs to win to also stay in the hunt for the title. It is definitely the "Wild West" of the GTC.
And even after tonight the season is far from over...unlike the Greater Thumb East where the Ubly cannot afford a loss against a resurgence of improved play from the Brown City Greendevils. If the Bearcats win, they have some hopes of for a share of the GTE title with the Harbor Beach Pirates. But the Bearcats will need a lot of help from the team that beat them last week pretty handedly - the Sandusky Redskins. Sandusky takes on Harbor Beach on Friday night. But Ubly must help themselves first by beating the soul stealing Greendevils!
*Also another special announcement for the Thumb Area fans. Thumb Tailgater Sports will have some special guests on Thursday & Friday night.
Thursday at our coverage of the girls basketball game for the GTW title between the Lady Lakers & Reese Lady Rockets, Sports Writer Paul Adams of the Huron Daily Tribune will take part in the pre-game & halftime shows with the Thumb Tailgater Sports Crew, Eddie Fury, Adam Filkins & Mark "Mad Dogg" Dimon.
Friday is a real treat - joining Eddie Fury & Mikey Smith will be special guests, WLEW Fall Season Sports Announcers, Rick Glaza & Jason "JJ" Particka at the Bay City All Saints versus the Vassar Vulcans boys basketball game, that has the GTW title still up for grabs.
**Congratulations to the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers on at least getting a share of the NCTL South League title by beating Memphis on Tuesday. Peck is still in the lurch hoping to pull off victories for a share to. It will be tough for the Pirates as tonight they must defeat Dryden, then next week against North Huron & Kingston. The Tigers meanwhile have Caseville & Dryden to end the season.
Over in Girls Basketball things got very interesting and once again the Greater Thumb "Wild" West lived up to it's billing as the Lady Vulcans defeated the Lady Lakers by one point on Tuesday night to force and hope for a three way tie towards the end of the season this Thursday night in girls basketball. Vassar has to defeat the feisty Bay City All Saints, while the Lady Lakers hold their destiny and must win for a share of the GTW title against Reese.

Wednesday Basketball Final Scores:

Vassar 55, @ Lakers 49

Tuesday Title Battles

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back live on the internet with an audio webcast of high school boys basketball action on a Tuesday night!
The NCTL South Title is on the line with the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers at the Memphis Yellowjackets. In the first meeting of these two teams Memphis came from behind to defeat the Tigers 39 - 36. The Tigers were able to attempt a last second shot to no avail.
There are many games all this week also that have major title battle implications.
***The Peck Pirates hope to have a piece of the NCTL South to. But they have to get through the Dryden Cardinals first!
Girls basketball has some big games to, as this is the final week of the girls basketball season.
Vassar Lady Vulcans host the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers in a poignant game where if Vassar wins, that would force the Lakers to play for a three way tie in the Greater Thumb West. But the Lady Lakes are looking to win themselves and set up a end of the season title fight with the Reese Lady Rockets. The Lady Rockets of course can't look past Cass City.
In the GTE, the Brown City Lady Greendevils cannot get caught sleeping against the last place Ubly Lady Bearcats. At this point for Ubly they have nothing to lose and would like to play spoiler against Brown City and rip away the Greendevils share of the East.

Friday Freak Out Of Hoops!

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back with a live internet webcast of boys basketball action on a Friday night!
It is the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers (10-5, 6-1) hosting the Bay City All Saint Cougars (11-5, 7-1). All Saints & Lakers already met just two days ago on the Cougars home floor, with the All Saints winning 75 - 69.
The Greater Thumb West title is still up for grabs, as the Vassar Vulcans are also in the mix. There is a couple games that have implications on who will have the upper hand for the title. It will be another "Wild West" coming down to the wire!
In the NCTL, Carsonville-Port Sanilac has a chance to at least get closer to the NCTL South title with a win over the NCTL North Champions - the North Huron Warriors. The Warriors edged the Tigers in the first meeting 68 - 65.
In second place of the NCTL South are the Memphis Yellowjackets who have an "NBA" like schedule in the next week. Memphis has a game tonight on Friday, Saturday vs Kingston , and then on Tuesday against Carsonville-Port Sanilac.
In the Greater Thumb East Harbor Beach has to get past the pesky Marlette Red Raiders in order to have a strangle hold on the GTE Title. Ubly Bearcats hopes Marlette can pull off the upset and then pray for another upset for the Sandusky Redskins over the Harbor Beach Pirates next week. Sandusky has already pulled their upset over Ubly this past week, and also look to avenge their earlier season loss to Brown City tonight, who by the way, Ubly will face on Wednesday.
This late in the season anything can happen at this point! Look at what the Brown City Lady Greendevils did on Thursday night - they defeated the #1 Class C State ranked Sandusky Lady Redskins, 41- 31!
**Paul Adams, Sports Reporter for the Huron Daily Tribune; will be the special guest for the pre-game & halftime shows on the Thumb Tailgater Sports live game webcast tonight.

Thursday Girls Night Of Fun

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back on the internet audio stream with a live webcast of high school girls basketball action. And it is a dandy tonight!
It is the rematch between the Sandusky Lady Redskins (18-0, 10-0) versus the Brown City Lady Greendevils (17-1, 9-1.
This could be the deciding game for the Greater Thumb East League Title. In the first meeting on Jan.21st, Sandusky defeated Brown City 51-49 on the Greendevils homecourt. Brown City hopes to even the odds and avenge that loss at what is sure to be a loud and raucous crowd at the "Thumb Dome" in Sandusky. Coverage starts at 7pm!
In the "Wild West" - Reese, Lakers, & Vassar all must win in order to stay in the hunt for the Greater Thumb West Title.

Wednesday Whoomp Of Hoops!

It may be a light Wednesday night of basketball, but there is a big game going down in the Greater Thumb Wild West.
The Bay City All Saint Cougars host the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers in what could be a major implication on the Lakers swimming away with the GTW. Should be a good one and a preview for the Thumb Tailgater Sports live coverage on Friday night as both these teams will face off again at Laker High.
Last night the Sandusky Redskin boys basketball team defeated Ubly and that puts the Greater Thumb East Title further into the trophy case in the halls of Harbor Beach. But with many teams starting to play "District" style of play - that has yet to be definite!
And speaking of Sandusky...the rematch is set for this Thursday night! The Brown City Lady Greendevils took care of business by defeating Marlette on Tuesday. Destiny is now in the hands of Brown City if they want at least a share of the GTE title. But it will be tough at the Thumb Dome against the Lady Redskins and sure to be another thrilling game that will be webcast live on the internet on Thumb Tailgater Sports!

Wednesday Night Basketball:
BOYS
Bay City All Saints 75, vs EPBP Lakers 69 - There is now a tie in the GTW, as All Saints hand Lakers their first loss. Rematch this Friday night at Laker High and will be webcast live on Thumb Tailgater Sports.

A Fat Tuesday Bulk Of Thumb Hoops

There is a bulk of game action in boys & girls basketball in the thumb area.
A game of particular interest is the Sandusky vs Ubly boys game. Sandusky has had a bad streak of late, and Ubly cannot afford a loss if they want a real good shot at a share of the Greater Thumb East Title. However, the Bearcats cannot look past the Redskins and if there was ever a trap game this season for Ubly, this is the one!
The NCTL South Title has yet to be decided in boys basketball. Of course CPS would like some more wiggle room at the top of first place if Peck can defeat Memphis.
Greater Thumb East girls basketball has a trap game of their own. The Brown City Lady Greendevils has to survive the resilience of the Marlette Lady Red Raiders in order to strive for a GTE title. If Brown City does - that gives them hope for the title with the rematch against the undefeated Sandusky Lady Redskins. I believe that game will decide who the GTE champions will be.

Thursday Tip In Of Hoops

The winter blast on Wednesday sure took out a few games in thumb area high school boys basketball. But a couple got in.
Like the big Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers upset over the Harbor Beach Pirates who were previously undefeated. The Lakers have played some of the toughest teams in the GTE and got even with Harbor Beach who they lost to earlier in the season. Although the game was meaningless in the league standings, it still begs a preview of the teams who will meet again in the first round of the Districts in Bad Axe. The Lakers are playing strong in the late season which is where any team wants to be at this point.
Another team playing strong are the Bay City All Saints who defeated Cass City on Wednesday. However, Cass City is still a team I believe will play spoiler in the GTW title picture.
Thumb Tailgater Sports will head out to the Bay City area for a live audio webcast of the Unionville-Sebewaing Patriots at the Bay City All Saint Cougars game on Friday night. Some very special guests will also take part on the webcast. Rick Glaza & Jason "JJ" Particka will be part of the crew for that night. It will be another minor reunion of the old WLEW FM sports Thumb Tailgater broadcast team.
But now back to the games on a Thursday night! Plenty of lady hoops on tap tonight.
The Kingston Lady Cardinals are still stinging from the shooting Bluestars of Port Hope in their earlier meeting on Jan.7th. The Lady Cardinals are riding on a winning streak, but so is Port Hope who have only lost one game on the season thus far. It should be a raucous atmosphere in Kingston high school for this game.
The Lady Lakers need to regroup and not hang their heads down from the beating they got against the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates on Tuesday. The Lady Lakers are tied for first in the GTW with Reese, but can't look past the Cass City Lady Red Hawks, if they want to stay in the hunt for the title!

Wednesday Winter Blast Of Basketball

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back with another live internet audio webcast for Wednesday night! In high school boys basketball court action - it's the rematch between the Ubly Bearcats at the Sandusky Redskins. In the first meeting on Jan.12th, the game went into overtime with Ubly getting the win 57-53. Sandusky came away with new found respect from everyone in the GTE after that loss. However the skid continued for the Redskins, only winning two of the last eight games overall.
The Ubly Bearcats hope to stay in the hunt for the GTE Title by winning from here on out in league play leading up to their rematch with the Harbor Beach on March 2nd who won the first meeting and now remain alone in first place in the GTE. But first Ubly has to get through Sandusky, who could spoil that goal for the Bearcats.
**Weather Winter Storm Permitting!**

**UPDATED** The winter storm that ripped through the Thumb area canceled the majority of Wednesday night games, including the Thumb Tailgater Webcast game of the night, Sandusky vs Ubly.

Tuesday Thumb Ton Of Hoops & Live Webcast

Thumb Tailgater Sports returns on the internet with a live audio webcast of high school girls basketball. Tonight will feature the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates hosting the Elkton-Pigeon-bay Port Lady Lakers.
That is if the Winter Strom does not pummel the Thumb area...
Although this game will mean nothing in the league standings as this is a cross conference game in the Greater Thumb -  it does beg a preview of a potential clash in the Districts.
In the first meeting between these two teams on Jan.13th; The Lady Lakers came from behind with a ridiculous 19 points in the 4th quarter to defeat the Lady Pirates 42-33!
So will Harbor Beach make EPBP walk the plank? Or will the Lady Lakers sink the Lady Pirates ship? Coverage starts at 7pm!
Plus, there is a ton of Tuesday Thumb area basketball!
Like the big battle in the NCTL North - Owen-Gage @ North Huron! Sports Reporter Paul Adams of the Huron Daily Tribune will be covering that game and keep Thumb Tailgater updated during our live webcast. CPS wants to keep a hold on to first place in the NCTL South, but they must beat Peck out of contention in order to do so. Of course the CPS Tigers will need Kingstons help on stifling the resurgence play of the Memphis Yellowjackets!
It is a pretty darn good night of  Thumb area hoops!

Thursday Trap Girls Basketball!

Thursday night has a few "trap games" in high school girls basketball. Some rematches for teams tonight.
Thursday morning today, Thumb Tailgater Sports was invited to cover two big signings at Croswell-Lexington high school. Cros-Lex senior Leah O'Connor signed a letter of intent with Michigan State University. O'Connor is a well known Blue Water Thumb area track star. She is a two-time State Champion for the Pioneers in track & field and All State cross country. Leah led her cross country team to three BWAC titles in 2007, 2008 & 2009. Also Cros-Lex senior Alexander West, an offensive lineman with the Pioneer football team signed with Northwood University. Thumb Tailgater Sports tried a live video event and scored some interviews. It was only second time we tried video, so it was out of focus, but this was a learning experience for TTS. We will be getting better webcams.

(click picture to see larger version)
The audio/video stream started at about 10:55 a.m.,Thursday morning on Thumb Tailgater Sports.

**The night of "Trap Games" became true as some minor upsets carried over from the Greater Thumb "Wild" West last in boys to girls basketball. The Lady Vulcans emptied the fuel capsules of the Reese Lady Rockets. The Lady Lakers continued their new winning streak to two games and thanks to Vassar defeating Reese, that created a current tie for first for Lakers with Reese.

Wednesday Hoops - Tribute To Chris Ogryski

Thumb Tailgater Sports has it's third straight night of basketball, live on the internet with a audio webcast of the much anticipated showdown in the Boys Greater Thumb East League. The undefeated Harbor Beach Pirates at the Ubly Bearcats! Both teams are undefeated in the GTE at 4-0. Will Harbor Beach invade another ship and put it up for a bounty? Or will the Bearcats rip a hole open and sink the pirate ship? Find out tonight! Coverage starts at 7pm.
Tonight will also be a Original Thumb Tailgaters tribute to my friend, Editor of Huron County Press, Chris Ogryski. As you know by reading the blog over the past week, Chris passed away on Thursday night. He was an Original Thumb Tailgater as is his best friend Paul Adams - Sport Reporter of the Huron Daily Tribune. Paul & I will share our feelings and some memories of Chris Ogryski.

**UPDATE: What a wacky and wild night of Greater Thumb Conference Boys Basketball! There was a feeling that due to Cass City playing so well in the last couple of weeks that they were going to eventually pull off an upset and turn some heads with double takes in the Greater Thumb "Wild" West!! The Redhawks did it by hammering the USA Patriots! In the Thumb Tailgater Sports game of the night Harbor Beach came from behind by 20 points in the game with the comeback win over Ubly. Then the Bay City All Saint Cougars stomps on the sputtering Reese Rockets. The Lakers continue to flood their opponents - the latest drowning was the rusting of the Bad Axe Hatchets. The Marlette Red Raiders invaded the Thumb Dome with an overtime victory over the Sandusky Redskins. And the Brown City Greendevils continue to possess souls in the GTE.
