Thursday All Thumb Girls Regional Final

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back on a Thursday night for a Regional Championship Final between the two lone thumb area teams in high school girls basketball.
Coverage starts at 6:30pm.
This Regional Final at Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary School pits the NCTL North versus the Greater Thumb East!
It's the Port Hope Lady Bluestars against the Deckerville Lady Eagles. (Live Game link)
Port Hope has been on a great roll - winning the NCTL North title and icing that cake with a District Championship, and moving on the regional final with a big win over Burton St.Thomas More on Tuesday. A big true test now comes for the Lady Bluestars who now face the Lady Eagles.
Deckerville played a tough competive schedule through the season in the GTC & BWAC Leagues, which have the Eagles battle tested. Especially after beating the #2 Class D state ranked Arenac Eastern Eagles on Tuesday night.
The Port Hope Lady Bluestars hope to keep shining bright as they have never backed down to any opponent and would like to make some Port Hope high school sports history with a regional championship.
Deckerville Lady Eagles feel the same way and wants to keep flying high and maybe catch a falling star. Good luck to both teams as this is a great moment for Thumb area sports fans. Whatever the outcome we will still have a thumb are girls basketball team going on to the Quarter Finals in the Class D State Playoffs!
**Some thumb area teams in boys basketball ended their season on Wednesday night in the District Semi-Finals. In Class B, Vassar lost a heatbreaker in overtime against the Yale Bulldogs, who will take on North Branch in the finals at Croswell-Lexington High School.
In Class C; USA & Cass City lost at the Bad High School Districts. At Memphis High School, Dryden lost to the host school, while Brown City made it to the finals against Memphis.
At the Class D Districts: North Huron Warriors had their way in a tough game against Owen-Gage to take on Akron-Fairgrove in the finals on the Warriors homecourt. The Thumb Tailgater Sports coverage of the Kingston High School Districts had Peck eliminating the NCTL South Champs - CPS Tigers; out of the playoffs. The Pirates now move on against the Deckerville Eagles who got by the Kingston Cardinals.
All the boys district finals will be played on Friday starting at 7pm.

District Championship Night - Thumb Area Teams

Thumb Tailgater Sports covered the No.81 District Championship game between two state ranked teams - #4 Brown City Lady Greendevils & #3 Sandusky Lady Redskins. The relentless defense and the hot shooting of the Greendevils clamped down on the Redskins where at one point late in the 2nd half, Brown City had a 14 point lead. Brown City came away with the victory 58 - 47. It was the first District title for the Lady Greendevils since 1998.
Brown City Lady Greendevils - District No.81 Champions

Brown City now moves on to the Regionals in Genesee where they are pitted against the #6 state ranked New Lothrop Lady Hornets, who defeated the Greater Thumb West Champions, the Reese Lady Rockets, 37 - 35.  Thumb Tailgater Sports will cover that whole Class C Regional No.22, that also includes Harbor Beach Lady Pirates taking on Saginaw Nouvel. Harbor Beach earned a second straight District title just edging a tough Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Laker team, 40 - 37.

The Port Hope Lady Bluestars continued their great season in their "rubber" rematch over the North Huron Lady Warriors, winning with ease 50 - 30. Port Hope goes on to the Regionals to face off against Burton St.Thomas More Academy. That Regional also includes the great story book season of Twining Arenac Eastern who defeated Saginaw Michigan Lutheran 58 - 47. It will be Eagles vs Eagles in that Class D No.28 Regional as the Deckerville Lady Eagles won their District Title over CPS Lady Tigers in overtime 56 - 49.
At the Class B No. 57 Districts, the North Branch Lady Broncos eliminated Vassar Lady Vulcans 57 - 35. North Branch takes on Durand in the Class B No.13 Regional at Millington High School.

Friday Girls District Finale

Friday night is District Final Championship night for girls high school basketball! Many schools are trying to make a bid to go to the Regionals. This time the seedings worked out where we will find some of the elite teams of the Thumb, and with a couple of top ten state ranked teams to top it off!
One in particular is the Thumb Tailgater Sports game of the night at the No.81 District final between two highly state ranked teams. #4 Brown City Lady Greendevils versus #3 Sandusky Lady Redskins; this is the "rubber match" of the season for the Greater Thumb East Co-champions. That District Championship is now a title that will not be shared! Coverage starts at 6:30pm.
The Reese Lady Rockets has a huge task against the #6 state ranked New Lothrop Lady Hornets.
Congratulations to the Vassar Vulcans boys basketball team on earning the Greater Thumb West Title. The first title in basketball in 20 years for Vassar. They did it by overcoming Reese with outside three point shooting and great defense, 64 - 42. Reese hung in there at halftime, only down 25 - 21. But Vassar came out of the halftime on fire right off the bat knocking the Rockets out of orbit at the end of the third period 48 - 30. It was a great regular season ender webcast for Thumb Tailgater Sports.
Another tip of the hat goes to the CPS Tigers boys team on winning the NCTL South Championship after defeating Dyden last night. According to CPS Head Coach Cliff Amey, this the first lone outright title in 30 years; and since the 1930's there has been only three league titles and one co-championship for Carsonville-Port Sanilac.
There are also some boys games left to wrap up the regular season through Friday weekend.
But tonight is all about "March Magic" in the Girls District Finals!

Thursday Championship Night Wrap Up

Thumb Tailgater Sports is on the road again for a live internet audio webcast on Thursday to wrap up the regular season of boys basketball coverage. Tonights it is a championship game in Vassar as they hope to take the outright Greater Thumb West title, with a win over the Reese Rockets. It's not going to be easy though, as the Rockets played spoiler for the Bay City All Saints on their bid for a share of the GTW. Reese took down the Cougars on Tuesday night, ripping them 71 - 61.
However!! Would the West be in this position had it not been the controversy with the clock not running at the end of last Fridays game between the Vulcans @ Cougars game? You decide!

The Vassar Vulcans did it's job on Monday to take a hold of the West with a close victory over Unionville-Sebewaing 42 - 41. Will the Reese Rockets play spoiler again tonight at Vassar? Coverage at 7:30pm!
Special guests tonight on Thumb Tailgater Sports will be WLEW FM Fall Sports color commentator JJ Particka & Sports Writer/Reporter, Paul Adams of the Huron Daily Tribune.
Carsonville-Port Sanilac hopes to wrap it's claim to the NCTL South Title tonight over Dryden - but Peck still has thoughts of a share of the title as long as they win out and CPS loses two straight.
Just to note, there are a couple games to wrap the thumb area boys basketball season as a whole on Friday & Saturday.

Another rubber match up of the GTC, is Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers facing off against the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates.
The Reese Lady Rockets made it to finals to take on the #6 state ranked New Lothrop Hornets. Rockets are ranked #12 in state.

Wild Wednesday of March Magic

/March Magic is back for the second round of the girls highs school basketball districts. Thumb Tailgater Sports continues it's coverage of the No.81 Districts at Brown City High School. Coverage starts at 5:30pm!
Last night in boys basketball some titles were decided and others almost.
First off, congratulations to the Harbor Beach Pirates on winning the outright Greater Thumb East Title. The Pirates soundly defeated Ubly on Tuesday to take the championship.
The North Huron Warriors took down Peck Tuesday to give CPS a stronger grip on the NCTL South title. The Tigers have two more games to win and claim the championship.
In the Blue Water Area Conference, Cros-Lex pulled off an upset over Richmond throwing that title up in the air, however Algonac defeated Armada with an upset of their own and enabled Richmond to win the BWAC championship.
The "Wild West" of the Greater Thumb lived up to that motto. Vassar had an off night from league play as they beat Mayville in a cross conference game. In the back of their minds they were hoping for a Reese Rockets win over the Bay City All Saints. Well Vassar got it's wish - and now the Vulcans have a share of the Greater Thumb West title. Now the Bay City All Saints have to win on Thursday over Bad Axe and to hope and pray for a loss for Vassar who just happens to take on the spoilers of the West on Thursday night...yep, the Reese Rockets. That championship game decider will be webcast live on the internet on Thumb Tailgater Sports!

*Thanks to WEYI Channel 25 Sports for getting Thumb Tailgater Sports on TV - sort of..., start it at the 3:33 mark.
**And also thanks to WNEW Channel 5 Sports for getting a piece of Thumb Tailgater somewhat. It's on the Sports Xtra 2/26/10 video clip starting at the beginning of the video.

March Magic began
for the girls basketball districts on Monday, and there is a day off before things heat up and tip off again in the second round on Wednesday.
The regular season continues however for boys basketball. In a make up game that had implications, the Vassar Vulcans got another boost towards the Greater Thumb West title with a league victory edging Unionville-Sebewaing 42 - 41, with a free throw to win on Monday night. A tough NBA like schedule for Vassar continues Tuesday night in a non league match up at Mayville. The Wildcats have not won a game this season and unfortunately against a good team like Vassar, that may continue.
Another team that stays in the hunt in the "Wild West" of the Greater Thumb are the Bay City All Saint Cougars. They have a huge task at the Reese Rockets who would love to play the spoiler role in the GTW. Reese wants to avenge their earlier season loss to All Saints much like they did against Unionville-Sebewaing on Friday night evening the league series. Bay City All Saints simply cannot afford to lose, much like Vassar cannot also. It could either come down to a tie for the Greater Thumb West or one of these teams will walk away as teh lone champions. Thursday is the season ender with Bay City All Saints hosting Bad Axe, and Vassar taking on Reese, which will be heard live on Thumb Tailgater Sports starting at 7:30pm.
Over in the Greater Thumb East - here it is in simple terms. If the Harbor Beach Pirates defeat the Ubly Bearcasts tonight, they are the Greater Thumb East Champions.
Another team that needs to win in order stay in the NCTL South title hopes are the Peck Pirates who hosts the North Huron Warriors, who played last night with a victory over a resilient Dryden team 67-52.
The Croswell-Lexington Pioneers take on the Richmond Bluedevils who hope to keep a least share of the BWAC title by the end of the week. Cros-Lex would like to spoil that party!

Last night on Thursday was the end of the regular season for thumb area girls basketball in the NCTL & GTC.
The Reese Lady Rockets blasted their way on as the lone holders and became the Queens of the west as the became the Greater Thumb West Champions with a victory over the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers, 61- 41. The Lady Rockets finished the season at 18-2 overall, 9-1 in the GTW. This was also their second straight Greater Thumb West Title.
Sandusky Lady Redskins had to fight hard to grab their share of the Greater Thumb East Title, with a comeback victory over the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates, 46 - 40. Sandusky are Co-Champions with the Brown City Lady Greendevils. The Co-Champs could possibly meet again in the District final at Brown City High School.
Thumb Tailgater Sports will covering all the games in that No.81 District.
The Port Hope Lady Bluestars had claimed the NCTL North Title over a week ago as well as the Memphis Lady Yellowjackets who took the NCTL South Championship.

Which now brings the last Friday night game for most of the high school boys basketball teams in the Thumb area of the NCTL & GTC. Some major implications on tap for tonight in the GTC.
First, in the Thumb Tailgater Sports Webcast game of the night that pits the Vassar Vulcans at the Bay City All Saint Cougars. This game tonight will still not decide who the front runner will be as the kings of west. Even if the Cougars win they still have games with Reese & Bad Axe. Both of those latter teams have to potential to play major spoiler for the All Saints at the end of the season next week.
If Vassar wins they can also hope to win outright or at least a share of the GTW title. Even the Lakers have an outside shot of winning a share of the title, even after three straight league losses! Now this is the "Wild West" I always been spewing about, and it is a delightful mess if it comes down to that! Tonight though could be the end of the road for the Lakers if they have a fourth straight loss to the Reese Rockets! That game will be broadcast on WIDL 92.1 FM.
The Greater Thumb East Title could be claimed by the Harbor Beach Pirates with a victory over the Sandusky Redskins and a Deckerville upset over the Ubly Bearcats. Does that scenario seem likely? We have seen some strange endings in the Thumb area high school sports during the basketball season! Ubly just has to take care of business and I am sure they have been wishing upon the stars and saying their prayers for a Sandusky win.
North Huron has already taken the NCTL North Title a couple of weeks ago, but the NCTL South championship has yet to be fully decided. Carsonville-Port Sanilac currently have a strong hold of the South, but must win out through the end of the season to claim the title. Peck also needs to win out and hope for a Carsonville loss in order to get a share of the title. It won't be easy for Peck as they have games against Akron-Fairgrove, North Huron & Kingston!
On a side note Ubly High School will have an Alumni Basketball Game, that is in turn a fundraiser this Saturday night. Check the right column of this blog for more info.
**Now then again there could very well be some cancellations due to the cold, cold blowing wind freeze that the Thumb has been slammed with! So if you know that a game will be postponed post it in our blogger comments section, or email.

Port Hope 63, vs Peck 30 -  Port Hope NCTL North Champs

Tonight marks the end of the season for the NCTL & GTC girls basketball teams. It also features two title championship games on the line!
Thumb Tailgater Sports features one of those games live on the internet! In the Greater Thumb West. It's the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers hosting the Lady Rockets. The Lady Lakers must defeat the Reese Lady Rockets for at least a share of the GTW Title. If they do not - Reese will be the undisputed Greater Thumb West champions. Vassar Lady Vulcans will be pulling for the Lakers to beat Reese to create a three way tie for the GTW title, but Vassar also has to beat Bay City All Saint Lady Cougars. What "Wild West" end of the season.

It's not over there! Harbor Beach Lady Pirates may have some fans from Brown City in the stands at the Thumb Dome tonight! Sandusky Lady Redskins hosts Harbor Beach in both teams season ending game, where if Sandusky wins they will share the Greater Thumb East Title with the Brown City Lady Greendevils. If Harbor Beach wins, the GTE title will be in "soul" possession of the Lady Greendevils.
Last year was a crazy end of the season in the East where Brown City took the title due to some minor upsets. Let me rehash your memory again, back in the year 2009....
On Tuesday, February 22nd, 2009: It looked like the Ubly Lady Bearcats would have at least a share of the title by beating Brown City 51-47. That created a three way tie for the title with Sandusky & Brown City. Sandusky had won that night over Deckerville to keep it's share.
But then later that week on Thursday the final night of the regular season of the GTC - Deckerville Lady Eagles and Harbor Beach Lady Pirates pulled off huge upset wins. Deckerville beat Ubly in the final minutes with a big comeback win 47-40. Harbor Beach shellacked the Sandusky Lady Redskins 43-35. Those upset wins enabled the Brown City to claim the GTE Title.

Log on tonight with Thumb Tailgater Sports with updates on the Harbor Beach @ Sandusky game and of course on the internet for the live audio webcast of the Lady Lakers versus the Reese Lady Rockets!

*Congratulations does need to go out again to the Port Hope on winning the NCTL North Championship, and also to Memphis Lady Yellowjackets on claiming the NCTL South Title.

Wednesday Whiplash!

Thumb Tailgater Sports was out Wednesday night making some stops in Huron County at some Greater Thumb West boys basketball games with implications. No webcasts though - just catching up on some teams and coaches as we get closer to the end of season.
Some big clashes were on tonight. In particular was the Vassar @ Lakers game. The Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers are still stinging from their two defeats last week against the Bay City All Saints. They have to forget about that and shake it off and get back into their hopes of a share of the GTW. It will be tough against the Vulcans as they have reloaded with the return of some players who were on a long suspension from basketball play. Vassar just needs to win to also stay in the hunt for the title. It is definitely the "Wild West" of the GTC.
And even after tonight the season is far from over...unlike the Greater Thumb East where the Ubly cannot afford a loss against a resurgence of improved play from the Brown City Greendevils. If the Bearcats win, they have some hopes of for a share of the GTE title with the Harbor Beach Pirates. But the Bearcats will need a lot of help from the team that beat them last week pretty handedly - the Sandusky Redskins. Sandusky takes on Harbor Beach on Friday night. But Ubly must help themselves first by beating the soul stealing Greendevils!
*Also another special announcement for the Thumb Area fans. Thumb Tailgater Sports will have some special guests on Thursday & Friday night.
Thursday at our coverage of the girls basketball game for the GTW title between the Lady Lakers & Reese Lady Rockets, Sports Writer Paul Adams of the Huron Daily Tribune will take part in the pre-game & halftime shows with the Thumb Tailgater Sports Crew, Eddie Fury, Adam Filkins & Mark "Mad Dogg" Dimon.
Friday is a real treat - joining Eddie Fury & Mikey Smith will be special guests, WLEW Fall Season Sports Announcers, Rick Glaza & Jason "JJ" Particka at the Bay City All Saints versus the Vassar Vulcans boys basketball game, that has the GTW title still up for grabs.
**Congratulations to the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers on at least getting a share of the NCTL South League title by beating Memphis on Tuesday. Peck is still in the lurch hoping to pull off victories for a share to. It will be tough for the Pirates as tonight they must defeat Dryden, then next week against North Huron & Kingston. The Tigers meanwhile have Caseville & Dryden to end the season.
Over in Girls Basketball things got very interesting and once again the Greater Thumb "Wild" West lived up to it's billing as the Lady Vulcans defeated the Lady Lakers by one point on Tuesday night to force and hope for a three way tie towards the end of the season this Thursday night in girls basketball. Vassar has to defeat the feisty Bay City All Saints, while the Lady Lakers hold their destiny and must win for a share of the GTW title against Reese.

Tuesday Title Battles

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back live on the internet with an audio webcast of high school boys basketball action on a Tuesday night!
The NCTL South Title is on the line with the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers at the Memphis Yellowjackets. In the first meeting of these two teams Memphis came from behind to defeat the Tigers 39 - 36. The Tigers were able to attempt a last second shot to no avail.
There are many games all this week also that have major title battle implications.
***The Peck Pirates hope to have a piece of the NCTL South to. But they have to get through the Dryden Cardinals first!
Girls basketball has some big games to, as this is the final week of the girls basketball season.
Vassar Lady Vulcans host the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers in a poignant game where if Vassar wins, that would force the Lakers to play for a three way tie in the Greater Thumb West. But the Lady Lakes are looking to win themselves and set up a end of the season title fight with the Reese Lady Rockets. The Lady Rockets of course can't look past Cass City.
In the GTE, the Brown City Lady Greendevils cannot get caught sleeping against the last place Ubly Lady Bearcats. At this point for Ubly they have nothing to lose and would like to play spoiler against Brown City and rip away the Greendevils share of the East.

Friday Freak Out Of Hoops!

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back with a live internet webcast of boys basketball action on a Friday night!
It is the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers (10-5, 6-1) hosting the Bay City All Saint Cougars (11-5, 7-1). All Saints & Lakers already met just two days ago on the Cougars home floor, with the All Saints winning 75 - 69.
The Greater Thumb West title is still up for grabs, as the Vassar Vulcans are also in the mix. There is a couple games that have implications on who will have the upper hand for the title. It will be another "Wild West" coming down to the wire!
In the NCTL, Carsonville-Port Sanilac has a chance to at least get closer to the NCTL South title with a win over the NCTL North Champions - the North Huron Warriors. The Warriors edged the Tigers in the first meeting 68 - 65.
In second place of the NCTL South are the Memphis Yellowjackets who have an "NBA" like schedule in the next week. Memphis has a game tonight on Friday, Saturday vs Kingston , and then on Tuesday against Carsonville-Port Sanilac.
In the Greater Thumb East Harbor Beach has to get past the pesky Marlette Red Raiders in order to have a strangle hold on the GTE Title. Ubly Bearcats hopes Marlette can pull off the upset and then pray for another upset for the Sandusky Redskins over the Harbor Beach Pirates next week. Sandusky has already pulled their upset over Ubly this past week, and also look to avenge their earlier season loss to Brown City tonight, who by the way, Ubly will face on Wednesday.
This late in the season anything can happen at this point! Look at what the Brown City Lady Greendevils did on Thursday night - they defeated the #1 Class C State ranked Sandusky Lady Redskins, 41- 31!
**Paul Adams, Sports Reporter for the Huron Daily Tribune; will be the special guest for the pre-game & halftime shows on the Thumb Tailgater Sports live game webcast tonight.
