Brown City Sweeps To Grab Share Of GTE Title
The Brown City Lady Greendevils faced some insurmountable odds in facing off against a very tough Mayville softball team. They had to win both games of the doubleheader in order to take a share of the Greater Thumb East Title. All the Lady Wildcats had to do was just win one game and walk away with the title outright.
Brown City did just that - they went against the odds and swept Mayville 4-0 & 10-0, to take a share of the GTE league title, and is now poised to take it outright if Mayville cannot defeat Marlette in a completion of an earlier tied game that was 2-2 in the 7th inning. Mayville have destiny in their "gloves" yet again as the finish of that game will see if Mayville & Brown City will end up being co-champions. That game completion may not be able to be played on a date until after the districts start!
In Game 1, it was scoreless through 7 inning; and due to the international extra innings rule, Brown City had a runner (Kristen Greene) on 2nd base to start the top of the 8th inning. The bats started to light up with the first batter, Asleigh Blovsky getting a bunt single that got Greene over to 3rd base and in the ensuing play Blovsky got to 2nd.
Brown City was now in scoring positon for the first time in the whole game. Sarah Murray was up next with a nice grounder RBI single into the left field to get Greene in for the first run. Runners then were able to be positioned at 2nd & 3rd. Vikki Vanhorn then hit a RBI double into left field also to bring in Blovsky for the score making it 2-0. Still with runners on 2nd & 3rd, Kari Burton made it first base due to a bobbled error at short stop that allowed two more runs to be scored for Brown City making it 4-0. Mayville was finally able to stop the onslaught to prevent another couple of potential runs.
However the Lady Wildcats was not able to answer back in the bottom of the 8th inning as the defense of Brown City got the 1,2,3 straight outs to take Game 1, and survive in the hunt for the league title.
Kristen Greene was the winning pitcher for the Lady Greendevils with 9 K's & 2 walks, that included three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the 7th inning, and stayed just under 90 pitches thrown for the game.
Amy Elenbaum had 5 K's for Mayville, along with her team mates who played great defense only allowing base runners in the 2nd & 3rd innings who were not real threats for scoring. Elenbaum had also threw about at total of 95 pitches.
Mayville also did have their scoring chances early on. In the bottom of the 2nd inning with two outs, but with runners on the corners, Jamie Martell was on third but got thrown out at home plate after an attempted steal to try to score. Another big opportunity was in the 4th inning where Mayville had base hit singles from Chelsea Roehl & Amy Elenbaum to reach 1st & 2nd base with no outs. Brown City was able to get out of that jam, thanks to their infield defense with a ground out and then a big fly out catch that enabled a double play out. In the 6th inning Shelby Powell & Chelsea Roehl had base hit singles but Mayville was not able to capitalize due to the tough pitching and fielding defense of Brown City.
Game 2 saw both Kristen Greene & Amy Elenbaum as once again starting pitchers for their respected teams. Mayville had their last huge moment to take a lead and score the first runs in Game 2 early in the 2nd inning with the bases loaded and with no outs. But the Brown City infield defense with two fly outs and then a strikeout by Greene took the air out of the Lady Wildcats last prime opportunity to score any runs for the rest of the game.
Brown City carried their base hitting momentum into the second game in a huge way by scoring 2 runs each in the 2nd, 3rd, & 5th innings.
And then wrapping up their sweep of the double header in the 6th inning by getting four runs scored and activating the 10-0 mercy rule. Thus ending the game officially at 11-0, as two runs scored due to a Kristen Greene two RBI single game ender.
For Brown City - Samantha Gierman was one of the top players with 3 singles, 3 RBI's, and scoring 3 runs herself. Sarah Murray also continued her power with two singles, a triple, RBI, and scored a run. Jennifer McClelland also had two singles, and scored a run. Ashleigh Blovsky hit a single and a double and scoring two runs. Alena Sanson batted a single and scored two runs. Kayla Muxlow had a single & scored a run in the 6th inning to help take Game 2, as did Kari Burton who scored in the 6th and drew two walks. Vikki Vanhorn also contributed with a RBI double in the 2nd inning.
Kristen Greene came away as the the winning pitcher for Brown City with 6 K's, one walk, four singles, and throwing a total of about 78 pitches.
For Mayville - Amy Elenbaum had two singles in the 1st & 6th inning; Annie Richardson & Jamie Martell each had a single themselves in the 2nd.
Amy Elenbaum was the losing pitcher throwing about 80 pitches, with no strikeouts and allowing two walks.

Harbor Beach Baseball Wins Greater Thumb East Title
It only took one inning in the bottom of the 7th for Harbor Beach to take the outright Greater Thumb East League Title. Sean Sorenson got a single and then stole 2nd & 3rd base to set the Pirates up for the winning run. After Ubly's Adam Glaza had struck out Chris Hagedon; Kenny Arntz then hit a long sacrifice flyout into left field enabling Sorenson to tag in for the run to take the win 2-1.
The game had to be completed from the May 3rd meeting in order to finalize the GTE Championship. On that date Harbor Beach won Game One, 10-4. The second was called due to darkness and was tied 1-1 at the 7th inning. Harbor Beach finishes at 10-2 in the league.

Friday - GTE Baseball Title Game
Friday is the day that the Greater Thumb East Baseball Title is ultimately decided. Harbor Beach heads back to Ubly to complete a game that was called off due to darkness earlier in the season. That game was all tied up 1 - 1 in the 7th inning.
The game now has to be finished due to the fact that Marlette brought their brooms and swept the Harbor Beach Pirates on Monday. That left the door open for Brown City to hope to gain a share of the GTE Title with Harbor Beach. But Brown City has to take of their business with the Mayville Wildcats on Thursday, May 27th for that hopeful share. The Pirates can take the title outright if they defeat the Ubly Bearcats in the restart of the unfinished game today.
Thumb Tailgater Sports will be there to cover the game via the blog and will update the final result as soon as the game is completed.

Monday Must Win For Title Showdowns!
Thumb Tailgater Sports is back with a live internet webcast on a Monday. It features high school baseball with the Bad Axe Hatchets at the Bay City All Saints Cougars! The Greater Thumb West title is on the line in a must win situation for both schools. Coverage starts at 4pm!
The "Wild West" also has a showdown in softball between the Reese Lady Rockets and the Unionville-Sebewaing Lady Patriots. The Patriots were undefeated in league play until Cass City handed them their first league loss. Both Reese & Unionville-Sebewaing have only one loss a piece in the GTW. They could share or outright take command of the title if one them sweeps!
**Update! The Bay City All Saints swept the Bad Axe Hatchets to take the outright Greater Thumb West Title in boys high school baseball action. The All Saints needed to win both games in order to take the league title and avoid coming back to the Lakers to finish up a tied game that was played earlier in the season.

Friday Blows In A Saturday Weekend Of Tournments
Well the rain fall came and dump on the vast thumb area making it a sloppy wet muddy mess on most of the ball fields preventing some great and implicating title games from taking place. No word on when these vast Thursday make up games will be.
Thumb Tailgater Sports was to cover with a live internet video webcast of the Bad Axe at Vassar baseball game on Thursday that ultimately got canceled. We are trying to decide what game to cover on Monday to make up for that cancellation. Monday games have plenty of intrigue in the Greater Thumb West for baseball & softball titles. So we hope to have a decision come late Friday.
Just a few games that were scheduled for Friday. Saturday has much Tournament action for many Thumb & Blue Water area teams.
Friday Games:
Memphis (NCTL 14-0, Overall 19-4) @ Genesee Christian - (Baseball)
Lutheran North @ Richmond (Baseball)
Richmond @ Owosso (Softball)
Clintondale @ Armada (Softball)
Harbor Beach @ Sandusky (Make up game: Softball & Baseball)
*The Memphis Yellowjackets against North Huron Warriors ball games have been moved to May 24th.

Thursday Title Implications & Webcast - Rained Out!
Thumb Tailgater Sports is on the road at Vassar for a live internet webcast of high school baseball. It will feature the Bad Axe Hatchets at the Vassar Vulcans, in a game that has major implications for the Greater Thumb West title. Coverage starts live at 4pm.
Another game of note, is girls softball in the Greater Thumb East. Tuesday BWAC Action - RAINED OUT!!
The Thumb & Blue Water Area teams have a furious last two weeks of regular league season play with titles still up for grabs!
This Thursday, May 13th - in high school baseball, the Bad Axe Hatchets have a huge doubleheader at the Vassar Vulcans. Vassar have been known to be the spoilers in virtually all of the major sports in high school since joining the Greater Thumb West when it comes to the league title. Can the Vulcans play that pivotal role in Bad Axe's quest for the GTW baseball title? With the Hatchets splitting their doubleheader against Unionville-Sebewaing it could be another nail biter to the final showdown with the All Saints on Monday, May 17th. The Bay City All Saints played their doubleheader against the Lakers and took the first game but the night cap was called due to darkness and the game ended in a tie. That game may have to be played out at a later time if the title is not decided by the end of the regular scheduled league season. The "Wild West" of the thumb in the GTC not only happens in football and basketball but now also in baseball!
If you are not able to make the trek to Vassar - log onto Thumb Tailgater for all the live baseball play by play!! Coverage starts at 3:45pm.
There is also major implications in the Blue Water Area Conference. Plenty of games to be played till the end of May!

Saturday Soaks Of Tournament Action
There are a slew of thumb & blue water area teams in various softball & baseball invitational tournaments on this Saturday, May 8th.
Unfortunately the local thumb area weather could also dampen the action as it calls for a 30 to over 50% chance of rain showers, windy and temperatures in the lower to mid 40's.
