Original Thumb Tailgaters Mourns

(Left to Right; Paul Adams, Chris Ogryski, Mark & Eddie Fury)

Thumb Tailgater Sports was incarnated many years ago on WLEW Cruise 102.1 FM, as a special pre-game show before either football or basketball games. It started with Eddie Fury, Paul Adams - Sports Writer of the Huron Daily Tribune, and Chris Ogryski - Editor of the Huron County Press, with the show being called the "Thumb Tailgaters Pre-Game Show". We all shared one thing in common and that was a strong passion of the coverage of high school sports.
I am still at a loss and confused on what happened on Thursday night when I was informed that Chris had passed away. It is still setting in for me and will for a long time to come.
Chris Ogryski & Paul Adams are the reasons why I started Thumb Tailgater Sports. When I left WLEW full time about a year ago in September, it was one of the most painful decisions of my life. For the one reason, the show would no longer be on and I would not be able to see, talk and hang out with my "boys". That didn't happen - Chris & Paul stayed in contact with me through that fall and encouraged me to attend some games they were reporting on for their respected publications.

(Left to Right: Paul Adams & Chris Ogryski)

Later on in the winter sports season, WLEW asked me to come back to work part time and to do play by play for basketball. That opened the door at various times to meet up with Chris & Paul to have a reunion of the "Original Thumb Tailgaters" for some special pre-game shows. Later on with the support of Chris, Paul & WLEW Football Sports Announcer Rick Glaza, I started doing more internet special pre-game podcast shows that later became the idea of doing Live Internet Audio Webcasts of high school sports in the Thumb area of Michigan. Thus Thumb Tailgater Sports was born and Chris Ogryski & Paul Adams were there pretty much every week for podcast pre-game shows that were exclusive only on Thumb Tailgater Sports.
Chris Ogryski did a story on Thumb Tailgater Sports on his own accord in the Huron County Press. He did it out of the love of our passion of high school sports and believed in what I was doing. Paul Adams also did the same thing in subtle ways in his column in the Huron Daily Tribune. (In the story it was mentioned that I would be doing play by play for WLEW this winter; that didn't pan out due to Thumb Tailgater Sports continuing into the winter sports season and hopefully many years.)
We became good friends because of sports. But were better friends in the things we also loved to talk about in life. Our families foremost and just about anything that "guys" like to talk about. So you can imagine what we would bring up when you hang out with your certain entourage. The friendship we have together I believe was and is growing every day. These guys made me a better sports reporter / broadcaster and most of all a better person.
Chris Ogryski's & Paul Adams family are also very forgiving for the time I took away on their days off or after a long day of work to do these special pre-game shows, that we would record in Chris's home. The shows usually were only about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, but we always spent four hours catching up and shooting the "breeze" about our lives and complaints...you know guy stuff.

This Wednesday Night the "Original Thumb Tailgaters" will come together once again in Chris Ogryski's hometown of Ubly at the high school for the Harbor Beach Pirates versus the Ubly Bearcats boys basketball game. The pre-game show will start at 6:30pm and be broadcasted with a live internet audio webacast on Thumb Tailgater Sports.  Paul Adams and I will pay tribute to our friend, Chris Ogryski. I still can't believe that Chris is gone.
Chris is Paul's best friend, and I was honored to be invited in their circle of life and friendship. Not only did I lose a friend but so did the Thumb area.
Please pray for and may God Bless Chris Ogryski's wife and two daughters. Our love is with you.

Tremendous Thursday

At the lanes is a big showdown in high school girls bowling with some state ranked teams facing off in the alley - #2 Sandusky versus #3 Bad Axe at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky.

Thumb Tailgater Sports is covering girls basketball tonight live on the internet with a webcast of the #8 State ranked, Reese Lady Rockets versus the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers. The Rockets have been blasting away their opponents since their lone loss to #1 ranked Sandusky Lady Redskins. Reese plans on landing from orbit and deploying their parachute to safely float away with another victory. But for all the preparation that space centers plan, something could always go awry. That little glitch in the plans for the Greater Thumb West title may be the Lady Lakers who are sailing on a 8 game winning streak who have been drowning teams with a flood of defense! Once again the GTW - whether it be boys or girls proves to be the "Wild West" of the Greater Thumb Conference. Coverage starts live at 7pm!
In the Greater Thumb East - the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates will take a turn at trying to give the Sandusky Lady Redskins their first loss on the season.
In the NCTL there is plenty of action. Every game counts in the NCTL in the league standings when playing either a North or South team. That makes it one of the toughest leagues to play in and this is also the last year where that happens, as the schedule opens up more for these small competitive schools.

The Thumb area should be pretty proud of the fact that we have so many state ranked teams playing in different sports this season - quite remarkable at this point time!

**In more exciting news from Thumb Tailgater Sports - this Friday night we will bring you "double the coverage", of high school boys basketball. There will be two crews out covering two different live games. If it works out this will be common place in our goal to be leaders of live Thumb area sports coverage. The two games being covered are Reese Rockets @ EPBP Lakers and Cass City vs Bad Axe. Also check out the Thumb Tailgater Sports website for more info on the links to games and our sports news feed from the great local thumb area publications.

Wonderful Wednesday Of Thumb Area Sports

Some news of note last night in Thumb area basketball. The Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers won their 8th straight game and set up their "Wild" West showdown with the Reese Lady Rockets this Thursday night. Thumb Tailgater Sports will webcast that game live on the internet starting at 7pm.
Sandusky Lady Redskins remain undefeated after beating Deckerville Tuesday night and are 14-0. But at halftime of that game, the score was reported to be 22-15, with Sandusky leading. Every team that the Lady Redskins will face from here on are going to be coming in giving it all they got and hope to be the first ones to hand Sandusky their first loss of the season. But will it happen?
With "February Fury" next week there is still no clear cut leader or claims to Thumb area division titles with the exception of the NCTL North in boys basketball where it appears that North Huron Warriors continue to dominate. The NCTL South race for the title is real tight! A coach had mentioned that the last team that does not lose will win the South. Every game is a must win for every team in the South.
**Some other big news involving Thumb Tailgater Sports is that we will experiment having two webcasts on at the same time with different games. This Friday night TTS will be webcasting the Reese @ Lakers boys basketball game, and our second game of coverage will be the Cass City Redhawks versus Bad Axe Hatchets game. The Redhawks & Hatchets game will also officially debut our new streaming host USTREAM, which will enable us to have an unlimited amount of webcast teams out doing different games.

Interesting games tonight, with Brown City hoping to keep a winning streak going, but tonight it is against Ubly! Laker boys (1-0, 4-4) are only playing their second league game of the year and it is up against the current 1st place in the GTW, Vassar Vulcans (3-0, 8-1). Vassar won, but barely over the Cass City Redhawks (0-3, 1-7) last Friday night 61-58.

Tuesday night basketball in the Thumb area has some tough girls & boys games of some interest. Can the Lady Lakers continue their winning streak? It sure will be tough against the Vassar Lady Vulcans! It is doubleheader night at Sandusky as both boys & girls take on Deckerville. Is there an upset here? On paper and with most folks that is a big NO!! But the game has to be played and you never know....
The Harbor Beach Lady Pirates visit Mayville as the Lady Wildcats have proven they have "game". Do they have enough game to play on the beach?
Over in the NCTL, can the Owen-Gage Bull Dogs extend their little winning streak against Memphis? The Peck Pirates at Kingston Cardinals match up should be a good one.

Thursday Recap: Lady Redskins Steals A Win Over Brown City & New Lothrop Makes New Case To Be #1

Thumb Tailgater Sports witnessed a great girls basketball game with two undefeated teams facing off in the GTE! It was a packed house in Brown City as the Lady Greendevils hosted #1 State ranked, Sandusky Lady Redskins.
With the score 51-49 and 5.3 seconds left on the clock, Kristen Greene grabbed a rebound after a missed free throw by Sandusky and she darted up the court with a chance to score a basket form the inside left wing. But Sandusky's Marissa Demott tap the ball slightly and it was enough to delay the attempt and Demott ended up stealing the ball and hang on for the win for the Lady Redskins, 51-49.
It was close through out the whole game, with both teams having trouble with some turnovers in the first half. Brown City was also in major foul trouble in the by the late 3rd period putting themselves in the penalty phase. That put the good free throw shooting of the Sandusky Lady Redskins on the charity stripe and hold on to their slim lead. The Redskins did not lead by more than seven points at one point in the game, and Brown City was within two or one points but was never able to get a lead or to tie it at any point in the game.
Sandusky's defense was voracious on one key player for Brown City - Sarah Murray. Whenever open underneath the basket or in front of the glass at the low post, she was quickly double or triple teamed on defense by Sandusky. Murray was still able to get the majority of her shots up but the ball would not fall through the net in her favor. Another point to add was that Sarah Murray was playing injured based on the fact she had quite a large brace on her left leg I do believe.

Some Unofficial Stats:
Sandusky: Marissa Demott with 24 total points, three 3 pointers, and making 5 free throws. Lauren Krause had 8 points, Kelsey Jensen 5pt, Jenna Stauffer 4pt, Whitney Fox & Kellie Ruggles with 3pt. The team was 16-38, 42% shooting. A glaring stat was 3-12 in the second half, winning the game by shooting 23 points in free throws! 1st half shooting was 13-26, 50%.

Brown City: Kristen Greene lead with 16  points & 12 rebounds, Sarah Murray 10pt / 10 reb, Alena Sanson 9pt, Kari Burton 8pt, and Samantha Gierman 4pt. The team was 18-57, 31% shooting. 1st half shooting was 10-28, 35%; 2nd half 8-29, 29%.

Sandusky is now 13-0, while Brown City gets the first loss of the season at 11-1. The rematch should be an intense one that could decide the GTE Title on February 18th in Sandusky, and later at the districts where both teams could potentially meet up for the third in a season - HOWEVER!!
Let's not forget the nail biting end to the season last year where Harbor Beach & Deckerville girls team, came with upset wins that fell into Brown City's favor. That could very well happen as there is plenty of games to play with Marlette & Mayville making some "noise" on the hard court to that could cause some havoc in the GTE. And as every single coach would say - one game at time!

** Another tidbit note to add - Sandusky Lady Redksins are currently ranked #1 in the State AP poll. But the #2 ranked New Lothrop Lady Hornets have now beaten both Class C State Finalists from last season - tonight beating the defending Class C State Champion Flint Hamady (#9) 38-26, and on the Hawks home court. The other big victory was the season opener against #5 ranked Morley-Stanwood, where the Lady Hornets won 64-47 in triple overtime.
New Lothrop will be in the Class Districts at Reese, where there is a anticipated match up with the #8 ranked Reese Lady Rockets who just lost to Sandusky a week ago Friday night. The winner of that District goes on in the Regionals at Genesee against the winner of the Brown City District which the current #1 ranked Sandusky Lady Redskins are involved in.
I think now based on those two big wins for the New Lothrop Lady Hornets, that they should be the new #1 State ranked team come next week. Sandusky could either be tied at #1, but I feel at a solid #2 spot. We will see if I am correct next week.

Thursday Night Battle In The Greater Thumb East

Thumb Tailgater Sports prepares for another great battle on the hardcourt in high school girls basketball in the Greater Thumb East. Live on the internet - a audio webcast of the Brown City Lady Greendevils versus the Sandusky Lady Redskins.  Coverage starts at 7pm.

There are many intriguing games for tip off tonight in thumb area girls basetball. The big one is Brown City & Sandusky. But let's not overlook the Port Hope Lady Bluestars who get their final shot to even the record with the Memphis Lady Yellowjackets who have been swarming other NCTL teams with major stings. The latest was against the Kingston Lady Cardinals who fought hard but couldn't even their score. Port Hope hopes to avenge their three point loss earlier this season to Memphis who won 50-47. Huron Daily Tribune Sports Reporter Paul Adams, will be updating Thumb Tailgater Sports on that game tonight.
And the Greater Thumb West warms us up with the Reese Lady Rockets taking on rival USA Lady Patriots.

But like mentioned the biggest game of the night...
BROWN CITY vs SANDUSKY!!
Both teams are undefeated thus far. Brown City are the defending GTE Champions of the 2008-09 season. Last year it was very tight race till the final week of the regular season that had Brown City take "soul" posession of the GTE Title. Let me rehash your memories...

On Tuesday, February 22nd, 2009: It looked like the Ubly Lady Bearcats would have at least a share of the title by beating Brown City 51-47. That created a three way tie for the title with Sandusky & Brown City. Sandusky had won that night over Deckerville to keep it's share.
But then later that week on Thursday the final night of the regular season of the GTC - Deckerville Lady Eagles and Harbor Beach Lady Pirates pulled off huge upset wins. Deckerville beat Ubly in the final minutes with a big comeback win 47-40. Harbor Beach shellacked the Sandusky Lady Redskins 43-35.
Those upset wins enabled the Brown City Lady Greendevils to claim the GTE Title.

So that brings us to this season for tonight's first meeting between Sandusky and Brown City, for the "Greater Thumb East Battle For The Title".
Brown City has taken a step with a victory over Harbor Beach Lady Pirates on Monday night, 58-32.
Sandusky on the other hand has been the most talked about team this year so far - I dare say even more than boys in the Thumb area ! Lady Redskins are still ranked #1 in the State Class C Poll, and cemented that status by beating the then #5 state ranked, undefeated Reese Lady Rockets last Friday, 73-57.
There will still be plenty of regular season play left however and anything can happen. But the question tonight will be - WHO WILL STILL BE UNDEFEATED?!?
Plus plenty of great round ball action going on tonight!

Wednesday Wrestling Test & Basketball

Wednesday, Jan.20, 2010 was the big "beta" test night for Thumb Tailgater Sports. As we strive to continue break down barriers with our coverage of Thumb Area High School Sports.
The Thumb Tailgater Sports Crew was out at the Sandusky High School "Thumb Dome" to do a "BETA TEST" of live video, utilizing the USTREAM service. Starting at about 6pm.
**I STRESS THAT THIS WAS ONLY A LIVE TEST OF THE EQUIPMENT THAT WE MAY USE FOR THE FUTURE PRESENTATION OF LIVE VIDEO OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS!! **
We broadcasted a live a wrestling meet at Sandusky. There were some glitches here and there, but it is for us to learn what we need to do to work on the improvements that will be needed. This test was going to be saved for the spring season, however due to the great work of Computer Tech Engineer - Adam Filkins, we had decided to give a test go early on. We hope if this works, you may see a game of the week of live video very soon! It is an exciting development!
Also, Thumb Tailgater Sports has a Facebook page to keep you updated on the latest news and events.
It is a very busy but productive week for Thumb Tailgater Sports, as we have the climatic showdown in the Greater Thumb East this Thursday night in girls high school basketball that features Brown City Lady Greendevils hosting the Sandusky Lady Redskins. Both teams are undefeated heading into this game.
The polls have closed and the Friday night boys basketball game will be Reese @ USA. A special start time for the coverage and pre-game show will be at 6:30pm as there will be a mid-season report in thumb area basketball.

**It was a basically a quiet night for basketball, but a couple rumbles were made...
A minor upset in thumb area boys basketball tonight with the Bay City All Saint Cougars defeating the Ubly Bearcats. Reese rips on Bay City John Glenn and gets ready for their rival in the "Wild" West with Unionville-Sebewaing on Friday night. Owen-Gage played back to back night games and won both!

Tuesday Tip Off Hoops

Thumb Tailgater Sports is back with another high school basketball game, live on the internet! Tuesday night brings high school boys basketball in the NCTL South that will feature the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers (4-3, 4-5) versus the Memphis Yellowjackets (4-4, 4-6).
The Tigers are coming off a close loss to the still undefeated North Huron Warriors on Friday night, where the score was 68-65. It is quite a tight race in the NCTL South standings where both teams could use some breathing room. Carsonville-Port Sanilac should be improved as a team after the loss to North Huron. However, the sting of a Yellowjacket could sneak on up at any moment!

Monday Sportsline Show - And Some New Developments

Thumb Tailgater Sports Line Show returns live on the internet, Monday night at 7pm.
Call the sportsline Skype # at 810-476-4680; leave a message, leave a text at our Skype line "thumbtailgatersportsline"; or email us at thumbtailgater@gmail.com . We hope to have a special guest lined up tonight.
Some new surprises and developments are starting to take shape now. I had hoped to bring live internet video webcasts of high school sports from the Thumb Area. We will be conducting tests this week on this process.
Some live game audio webcasts coming this week will have Thumb Tailgater Sports travel to Carsonville-Port Sanilac High school on Tuesday night that features boys basketball in a NCTL South League match up between CPS Tigers versus Memphis Yellowjackets. CPS almost took down the undefeated North Huron Warriors on Friday night, but North Huron escaped with a three point win, 68-65.
Thursday night brings some high school girls basketball coverage with the Sandusky Lady Redskins at the Brown City Lady Greendevils! Sandusky gave reason on why they are the #1 Class C State ranked team by taking down the former #5 state ranked Reese Lady Rockets on Friday night. Brown City has a brutal NBA like schedule before they meet up with Sandusky.
Friday night is up in the air for Thumb Tailgater Sports as we are not sure if we will be doing a game. Some choices for a boys basketball game are; Kingston vs Owen-Gage, Reese @ USA,  Dryden vs North Huron, even the Peck vs Akron-Fairgrove game has some intrigue. We will figure it out soon. Do you fans have any suggestions?!!
There is a good girls basketball game that will be happening tonight in the GTE. It pits the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates versus Brown City Lady Greendevils!! Plus more hoops tonight!

Monday Night Games:
GIRLS
Brown City 58, @ Harbor Beach 32

Thursday Hard Court Hoops

Thursday night presents a night of more Thumb area league games and some cross over conference confrontations of high school boys basketball. Sandusky is still feeling sore after losing to Ubly in overtime on Tuesday night. They need to shake that off and the cure for that is a victory over a very tough Reese Rocket team.
It will be tough for the Redskins as this non-league game is played at the "Space Center Launch Pad" of Reese High School Gym. By the way - Ubly and Harbor Beach have had wins over Reese. Can Sandusky be the third GTE team to empty the fuel capsules over the Rockets?
Speaking of Harbor Beach - ARRRRRRGGG!!! (say in Pirate voice) the Pirates are still undefeated! And Harbor Beach looks to remain the top ship of the lakes in the Greater Thumb East, as they face off against the Deckerville Eagles.
Another games of note is Unionville-Sebewaing vs Bay City All Saints and Brown City @ Marlette.
Plus there is plenty of NCTL girls basketball action! Some notable games are North Huron @ Kingston, Memphis vs Owen-Gage, and Port Hope @ Peck.

Saturday Wrestling Sandusky Redskin Invitational

Thumb Tailgater Sports is preparing for future coverage of a live thumb area high school wrestling event. I attended the Sandusky Redskin Invitational at the "Thumb Dome", the Mark S. Hund Gymnasium, to  learn about this highly competitive sport and so far I really like the intensity of it. An athlete in this sport is not just using strength, but also stamina, skill, and especially the "smarts". Thinking of what to do next to get an advantage with two minutes in three periods is a pretty tough thing to do when up against an opponent you really have no idea what they have in store for you.

Friday Night Leauge Hoops

**UPDATE : Weather Causes Some Cancellations**
There are big league showdowns in girls basketball tonight! Unfortunately due to the weather, the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates who were to host the Brown City Lady Greendevils, has been POSTPONED.
Brown City is still undefeated, at 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the GTE league holding at 2nd place, while Sandusky Lady Redskins are holding firm in 1st at 2-0 in GTE league and 9-0 overall. But sneaking up behind those two powerhouse teams are the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates who are currently 6-1 overall and at 1-0 in the GTE.
Another game to check out is in the Greater Thumb "Wild" West, that pits the still undefeated Reese Lady Rockets (5-0, 1-0) hosting the Vassar Lady Vulcans (6-0, 0-0). It is a battle for first place in the GTW, and the league play opener for Vassar. This game will be live on the radio dial at 92.1fm WIDL.
USA Lady Patriots also would like to stay at a first place with either Reese or Vassar if they can get past the  Lady Lakers tonight also.
Boys Basketball also has a full slate in the NCTL & BWAC leagues. North Huron Warriors hoping to stay focused to remain undefeated as take on a team you can never look past - the Peck Pirates. Plus many other competitive games on tap for tonight! Have fun at the games fans!!

Thursday Night Dinner With Thumb Tailgater Sports Crew

I took my TTS staff out for dinner at the Port Hope Hotel before we headed to Port Hope Community School for our coverage of the Port Hope Lady Bluestars versus the Kingston Lady Cardinals. I didn't think that I would be able to handle the legendary "Leroy Burger", but the sports crew did.

This is a "Leroy Bacon & Cheeseburger". I do believe it is 16 to 18 ounces of beef.

"Mad Dogg" Mark & Mike Smith show off their burgers and are about to stuff themselves...

I went with the safe stomach stuffer of the delicious all you can perch dinner.

The Thumb Tailgater Sports Stat Crew were able to finish it all off, along with a basket of french fries! However, later on they did have to use the school lavatories during the live basketball game webcast several times! Thanks to the hospitality of the "Little Town With The Big Welcome"..the fine people of Port Hope!
