Thumb Tailgater Sports: Season 3, New Era Begins

It is amazing that Thumb Tailgater is about to start the third year of Michigan's thumb area coverage of high school sports. Initially in the first year it was only to be covering football. That changed quick when the response was overwhelmingly positive and we decided to move forward in girls & boys basketball, baseball and softball. So much so that other internet webcaster's have been inspired to start up sites in their own regional area.
With that comes some changes - specifically this blog. The Thumb Tailgater Sports Blog was what launched the shaky start of TTS. Thanks to some help along the way by week 4 in year one, a website was born. The blog has been a great resource to all the fans.
Thus a new era will be the end of this blog which will now be transferred to the relaunch of the Thumb Tailgater website. This blog will be kept up for archival history purposes.
The new blog will now be integrated on the website. The blog will continue to do what it has done in the past two years. Post schedules, some news bits, special picture or video's, and the latest daily scores on a consistent basis. It all starts this week!
So now everything can be found on one site at - www.thumbtailgater.com

Kyle Hall Passes Away

Kyle Hall was a standout athlete from Marlette, Michigan. More notably, he was a kind, modest and humble spirited young man who had just graduated high school and was about to display his talent in basketball at Alma College. Kyle was also part of the 2010-2011 first team high school boys basketball all star team of the Thumb Sports Writers Association. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Prayers go out to the whole family of Kyle Hall.
Services for Kyle Hall: Visitation on Tuesday, July 19th from 1pm - 9pm at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, MI.
Funeral will be Wednesday, July 20th, 1pm at the Marlette Junior-Senior High School Gym.
Posted once again is the video interview Thumb Tailgater Sports did with Kyle Hall during the photo shoot for the 2010-2011 first team all star basketball players. Following that is the great game that Kyle played against Harbor Beach during the regular season that enable the Marlette Red Raiders basketball team clinch the Greater Thumb East Title. First Day Of Summer 2011 - H.S. Sports Season Over

This past weekend the 2010 - 2011 high school sports season ended for the year as well as our coverage. We made it through the second bumpy year. When this idea first started - the intention was to only focus on the thumb area of high school football. That changed in the first year alone and momentum carried into boys and girls basketball. That was suppose to have the season coverage end there...but the baseball / softball bug bit and we continued the coverage into that first year. It ended up the same deal in the second year of Thumb Tailgater Sports covering football, basketball and some baseball / softball games.

So now "Year 3" will approach soon in late August. Some minor changes with our coverage will come, but for the better. We may even pop up for some special events this summer. Stay tuned for the latest news soon.

A very special thanks to the fans and to the people who helped with the past two years internally and externally with Thumb Tailgater. See you soon at the games or other events.

We are also getting ready for the big hunt for major sponsors for the third year. If interested just send an email or leave a message on our Sportsline Skype number.

Wonder Wednesday...

I have been wondering today if it will be possible to cover at least one more high school sports event before the 2010-2011 season ends.
We just have not been able to bring live game internet webcasts for any Districts or Regionals, because of prior commitments with our other "real" jobs.
Next season will be different however as Thumb Tailgater plans to stretch throughout the playoff season in baseball/softball. We have done it the past two seasons for football & basketball. Also expect some good things coming soon out of this little operation. Thanks to all for your support and stay tuned....

First day of June, and another nice day of weather! Where was this throughout the whole high school/softball season?!? It seemed like there was a cancelled game at least once a week or more. Knock on the wood of a bat! District semi-finals and finals are this Friday & Saturday as the swing to Battle Creek gets in high gear.
Still deciding yet if a District will be covered on Thumb Tailgater. It all depends if our regular priorities allow us to get out. We will keep you posted.
There are still some regular season games to be made up though. In particular is the restart of the USA @ Vassar baseball game, that will ultimately decide who the Greater Thumb West Champions will be.

The Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers swept the Deckerville Eagles to become the North Central Thumb League South Division Champions on Friday, May 27, 2011.
Game One featured a great pitching display by Tiger starter Troy Taylor who had a perfect game / no hitter with no walks and 13 strikeouts, along with defensive play from the Tiger team fielders. That enabled a 3-0 victory. The Tigers also took Game Two, winning 9-1 to grab the outright championship.

*Congrats out to the Brown City Lady Greendevils on winning the Greater Thumb East Title by defeating the feisty Sandusky Lady Redskins, finishing league play at 9-1.
In Game One, Jennifer McClelland got the win on the mound by striking out five, gave up six Sandusky hits. Hitters for BC were Vicki VanHorn with an RBI double, and Alena Sanson with an RBI single.
Game Two had another impressive win on the mound from B.C's Alyssa Ambu with seven strike outs and giving up just three hits in the shutout. Brown City's Ashleigh Blovsky blasted a solo Home Run, and Chelsi Ford had a single along with two RBI's.
Weather permitting - on Thursday, May 19th; it will a sort of an unofficial "Greater Thumb Conference Championship" game. The newly crowned GTE Champs, Brown City Lady Greendevils are at the GTW champs, the Unionville-Sebewaing Lady Patriots.

NCTL South's Lady Yellowjacket Gillespie Buzzes In To The Windy City

Memphis Lady Yellowjackets standout athlete Desiree Gillespie has committed to play college basketball at Concordia University of Chicago. She is very excited to take her game to the next level.
Gillespie has been a standout in high school basketball and softball for Memphis. She first impressed the Concordia staff at a high school basketball showcase during the fall season in Swartz Creek, Michigan.
Desiree led the Lady Yellowjackets to back to back NCTL South League championship titles. She averaged 14 points per game. Memphis Girls Baseketball Head Coach, Ken Helinski described her as a very competitive, physically strong, and a leader both on and off the court. She is a student athlete who excelled in the classroom but also in sports.
Desiree Gillespie was also just named to the Michigan Basketball Coaches All Academic All State Team, which requires you to have above a 3.5 grade point average, and make All Sate Mention by the Detroit Free Press.
Desiree also received accolades locally with many post season honors that included: First Team ALL NCTL, Second Team All Blue Water Area, Third Team All Macomb County secod tier, special mention of the BCAM's Best, and Honorable Mention Detroit Free Press All State Team.
Desiree Gillespie is the daughter of proud parents Dean and Karen Gillespie of Memphis.

**Well the Michigan Mother Nature weather washed out some tournaments and games. Will they be made up? Hard to believe as the league games have to be finished as the districts fast approach!
Had a great time at Dow Diamond in Midland covering the Cass City, Ubly & Deckerville high school baseball teams on Friday night. Today on Friday the 13th...Thumb Tailgater Sports presents a live internet streaming audio webcast for a doubleheader of high school boys baseball action. It will be coming to you from Dow Diamond in Midland. Dow Diamond is the home baseball field for the Great Lakes Loons. First game will be the Cass City versus Ubly; second game will be once again Cass City facing off against Deckerville. Coverage starts at 5pm.
Some other coverage area games take place today that will lead us into a Saturday of tournaments.

Well here we go again take one...take two...take three is the charm? Thumb Tailgater Sports presents a live internet streaming audio webcast of high school girls softball today. As of noon Friday the game is confirmed. It is to feature a Greater Thumb West league game with the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lady Lakers at the Unionville-Sebewaing Lady Patriots.
The weather is expected to be sunny and temperatures in the mid to lower 50's by game time.
There are also a slew of Thursday cancelled games that were rescheduled to be played today also.

Some BWAC schools in the Thumb Tailgater coverage were able to get in some games. Once again weather permitting...there are some games that kick off the start of the season.

H.S. Baseball & Softball Delayed By "Jack Frost"

It appears that the High School Baseball & Softball season could be delayed for the next couple days if not the week. All due to Mother Nature, Jack Frost and our wonderful Michigan weather that continues to keep things on "ice".
But there are a couple things coming your way dealing with the Thumb Sports Writers Association High School Basketball Awards in the next couple weeks. First up is the announcement of the Girls Basketball categories consisting of: First Team, Player Of The Year, Sixth Player, Defensive Player and Coach of The Year.
The results will be released on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 on the TSA media newspaper publications, websites, blogs, facebook, etc.
The Boys Basketball results will be posted on the following week - Wednesday, April 6, 2011.
Thumb Tailgater Sports will have video interviews with the first team players along with a couple of TSA media members on some commentary. However I must warn that the audio volume suffered again this year due to baseball & softball practice going on in the background. I apologize again as last year TTS dealt with the background noise. Next year I will try to get it right!

With the girls high school basketball semifinals now set in stone the teams now head to the Breslin Center in East Lansing to see who will survive on March 17 & 18, and then play for the State Titles On March 19th. The semifnals & finals will be presented by live video & audio with info and links found at MHSAA.com
That leaves the still on going high school boys basketball playoffs. There remains one lone Thumb Tailgater area coverage team. That is the Yale Bulldogs who will take Flint Powers Catholic, in the Regional Final at Mt.Morris High School. Flint Powers Catholic won the Class B State Title in 2009. The winner moves on to the Quarterfinals to take on the winner of the Regional No.12 winner at Imlay City which consists of last years Class B State Champion Detroit Country Day. They will face off against Pontiac Notre Dame Prep tonight at Imlay City High School.

Tension Tuesday - H.S. Girls Quarterfinals - Live Webcast

Thumb Tailgater Sports returns with the final game of the basketball season with another live internet streaming audio webcast of high school girls basketball. We now head out to cover the Class D No.14 Quarterfinal at Waterford Mott High School.
This game pits the defending Class D State Champs; Waterford Our Lady Of The Lakes facing off against the Bay City All Saints Lady Cougars. Coverage starts at 6:45pm.
We also wrap up our live webcasts of the Thumb Tailgater area teams of high school boys basketball. We do still have Yale Bulldogs still in the mix at the Class B Regional No.13 Regional at Mt.Morris High School. Yale defeated Bridgeport 60-57 in the Semifinals on Monday, and will now take on Flint Powers Catholic on Wednesday. Flint Powers won the Class B State Title in 2009. Treacherous Thursday Title Night - H.S. Boys Basketball.

Tonight the bulk of the high school boys basketball season will wrap up, with a couple left on Friday night in the Thumb Tailgater Sports coverage area.
Some League championships should be decided by tonight also. In the Blue Water Area Conference, the Imlay City Spartans already have a share of the title and with a win tonight over Croswell-Lexington Pioneers; they will have the championship outright. Yale has to defeat Richmond tonight and hope for the Pioneers to play the spoiler role.
Over in the Greater Thumb East, Marlette Red Raiders is expected to grab a share of the GTE if they defeat Mayville tonight. The Harbor Beach Pirates can also grab a share of the title if they can pull off a win against a strong but unpredictable Sandusky Redskin team. If the Pirates lose then Marlette are outright champs of the GTE.
The Tri-Valley East Title can be won out right by Bridgeport who currently have a share of the title (their third consecutive). But in order for that to happen Frankenmuth has to lose, who have no intentions of doing so tonight against their potential spoiler opponent the Birch Run Panthers.
The NCTL North Title is...can someone explain this one to me again?! I know North Huron has a share and I believe if they have a loss tonight against Deckerville, Akron-Fairgrove will gain a share. Simply put - if North Huron wins, they are the outright champs.

On the last day of February Fever will end but turns into a magical, maniac, madness of high school girls basketball district action starting tonight on Thumb Tailgater Sports. We will cover a first round game of the No.81 Class C Districts, and the rest of the bracket into the later week. The featured game is the Brown City Lady Greendevils at the NCTL South Champs; the Memphis Lady Yellowjackets.
Last year in the Districts when these two teams met it was on Brown City's home court where they took down Memphis with the final score of 57-35.

It features the Harbor Beach Pirates at the Marlette Red Raiders. Harbor Beach sits at first place and Marlette at second. A Pirate win clinches the GTE Title. A Marlette win gets them tied for first place and both teams will have to wait till next week to see who ends up with the championship. Coverage starts at 7:15pm!
Algonac Lady Muskrats became the outright BWAC Champs last night with their victory over Imlay Ciy Lady Spartans. The Reese Lady Rockets became outright GTW Champs last night as well.
BWAC Boys Title is still on the line with both Yale and Imlay City still tied for first place. Both teams will try to get victories in their big games tonight, to lead up to their showdown in a battle for the stronghold of the BWAC Title on Tuesday.
Good Luck to the area teams in the MHSAA Bowling Regionals, and to the Richmond wrestling team on their quest for a second straight State Title. It will be a gauntlet with the MHSAA Wrestling Quarterfinals starting today. Saturday will be the Semifinals & Finals.

Kudos out to the Bay City All Saints boys basketball team on their first league title in school history. This school has had many district, regional championships, even back to back state titles back in the mid 1970's. But never a league title?!! Well add that to their list of accomplishments. Of course now the focus is another victory to win the Greater Thumb West Title, and then onto a playoff run. Hard to believe we have not been able to cover the All Saints this year, where as last year we had them on numerous times.

Thumb Tailgater Sports will return to the webcast internet wireless waves this Friday night for high school boys basketball. It will feature a GTE Title fight with the Harbor Beach Pirates at the Marlette Red Raiders.
Congrats to the Owen-Gage Lady Bulldogs on winning the NCTL North Title. They do share that title with the Port Hope Lady Bluestars, who were not expected to repeat as champions by most in the sports local media. That is quite a compliment to their new head coach of this year, Marilee Schock.
Last night the Reese Lady Rockets did what many teams could not do for most of this season - Take down the formerly undefeated Sandusky Lady Redskins. The quick and smothering full court pressure defense of the Lady Rockets blasted Sandusky throughout the whole game. Sandusky did tie it a couple times in the 1st quarter, but Reese attacked right back with their smart offensive play and never lost the lead from the 2nd quarter on to the end of the game. Reese take back their crown and reign this year as the "Queens" of the Greater Thumb Conference.
Tonight could be history in the making in boys basketball with the Bay City All Saint Cougars (8-1, 13-3). They are on the verge of becoming Greater Thumb West Champions for the first time and need just one more victory to do so. But it is a gauntlet for the All Saints to get there, starting tonight against the Unionville-Sebewaing Patriots (5-4, 9-7). In the last meeting the Cougars escaped with a 66-65 win. They then have games with EPBP Lakers, and Vassar in league play.

Thumb Tailgater Sports has live Friday night high school girls & boys basketball action. We get back to the BWAC with the Capac Chiefs at the Imlay City Spartans. Coverage starts at 5:45pm.
Capac Lady Chiefs (7-4, 9-8) have an outside chance of getting a cut of the BWAC title with some help from others in the league. But the Imlay City Lady Spartans (6-5, 11-6) will not make it easy. Imlay City may be out of the hunt, but would not mind playing the spoiler tonight against the Lady Chiefs. Leading the BWAC girls standings is the Algonac Lady Muskrats (9-2, 14-3) who needs just one more league win to grab a leading share of the title. With the winless Almont still on Algonac's schedule that is likely to happen.
In BWAC Boys league: Imlay City Spartans (8-2, 13-2) sit on top at first place tied with the Yale Bulldogs (8-2, 14-2) who are off tonight.
The Capac Chiefs (6-3, 8-6) suffered a one point loss to Algonac on Tuesday to go down tied at second place with Richmond. A Capac win can get them back in the quest for the title, a loss could take them out. For Imlay City they would like to avenge their earlier league loss to the Chiefs by a buzzer beater winning basket. Regardless this BWAC boys title claim is far from over. This live game coverage will be followed by the girls game.
Other notes on Last night: Congratulations to the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers on earning the outright NCTL South Boys Championship with their win over Memphis last night.

February Fever continues on the Thumb Tailgater Sports coverage of thumb area basketball teams. Tonight we present a live internet streaming audio webcast of boys basketball action with the Memphis Yellowjackets at the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers. Memphis need a must win for any hopes of a share of the NCTL South Title. The Tigers already have a share, but with a victory tonight they will have the championship outright.
NCTL North Boys: The Akron-Fairgrove Vikings have pulled off some good wins that now puts them in the hunt for the title. They have to win out and also need North Huron to lose at least one of their next league games to grab the championship. If they both win out - both teams share the title. **Now what I just posted there is what I "believe" is supposed to happen, based on the revised league rules in the NCTL which have been misunderstood by many.

Thumb Tailgater Sports will be back with a couple more live game webcasts this week. This Thursday we venture back to the NCTL South in boys basketball action with the Memphis Yellowjackets at the CPS Tigers. With three league games left on their schedule, CPS has to just win one more to capture the league title outright. CPS also suffered their first loss of the season to the Sandusky Redskins on Tuesday.
Then on Friday night it is a doubleheader night of BWAC girls & boys basketball action with the Capac Chiefs at the Imlay City Spartans. The BWAC is "wacky"; especially in boys as there is still a tight race for the league title with four teams all having legitimate claim till seasons end.
Last night the Memphis Lady Yellowjackets won the NCTL South Championship with the win over Deckerville. In the NCTL North; I am pretty sure, but I believe Port Hope Lady Bluestars has to win their remaining league games and they take the title.
Over in the Greater Thumb East; the Brown City Lady Greendevils made things interesting as they avenged an earlier season lost to Marlette. Both teams now have two league losses and now need to help each other if they both want a piece of the GTE title. They both need wins over the still undefeated Sandusky Lady Redskins. In the Greater Thumb West; the Reese Lady Rockets have a the championship if they take wins over Bad Axe & Unionville-Sebewaing.

Marlette has a big week that starts with tonights game in what many local sports pundits say is a must win situation.
